Discussion states: There are thirty-six types of Huang disease (Yellow Disease). Although the recorded names and numbers are the same, the clinical manifestations vary. These are not comparable to Danhuang (Jaundice). Seeking evidence in classical texts yields no relevant records. However, this disease was unknown to people in the Central Plains; it occurs frequently only in the Southeast regions. Its presentation resembles Rebing (Heat Disease). Folk practitioners can distinguish it. By examining the blood vessels in the patient's mouth, one can identify Huang disease, then apply cauterization and acupuncture treatments, which often lead to recovery. Generally, in the Southeast region, the terrain is damp and the climate is hot. Dampness and Heat steam each other, easily forming Zhangdu (Miasma Toxin). When humans contract this pathogen, they develop this type of Huang disease. If treatment is not timely, the damage is rapid. Cauterization and moxibustion therapies must not be delayed.
Heart Huang First
The patient presents with a red face, open mouth, panting, frequent fright, excessive sleepiness, irritability and pain in the hands and feet, sores on the tongue, urgency and oppression in the epigastrium, loss of appetite, retracted tongue, and dry mouth. Within seven or eight days, the patient will likely run around in madness. This is Heart Huang. First, cauterize the Shangwan (CV13) acupoint, then cauterize the Guanyuan (CV4) acupoint, and perform moxibustion for eighteen moxa cones. If there is no improvement, perform moxibustion for seven more cones. Then cauterize the Xialian point on the back and the Tianchuang (SI16) acupoint. If still ineffective, administer Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction).
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove seedlings), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, remove pulp and bran-fried), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove whiskers, each 1 liang), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, remove root and joints, 1.5 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted and crushed), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma).
The above eight ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 5 qian bi per dose. Add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.7 sheng remains, strain, and take warm after meals, three times daily. Drink a small amount of hot porridge afterwards to assist the medicinal power. The goal is to induce sweating.
Liver Huang Second
The patient has yellow teeth, eyes red like cinnabar, dry mouth with heat and thirst, weak physical strength, and a body color that is greenish-yellow. This is Liver Huang. If blood issues from the eyes and breathing is rapid, the condition is incurable. First, moxibustion is applied to Ganshu (BL18). Then cauterize Xinshu (BL12) and Shangxin. Moxibustion is applied to Xialian, then cauterize three cun below the umbilicus, then cauterize Zhongwan (CV12) and the two Yangming points. If there is no improvement, perform one hundred moxa cones each at Tianchuang (SI16) and Xinshu (BL12). If still ineffective, administer Tujiang (Earth Slurry). If still ineffective, administer Zhimu Tang (Anemarrhena Decoction) and perform cauterization/moxibustion at Baihui (GV20). Tujiang Formula:
Ren Fen (Human feces, half a zhan, mixed with three sheng of fresh well-water, stirred one hundred times in a pit in the ground, filtered to obtain two he of juice), Qing Hao Zhi (Artemisiae Annuae Juice, one he; if juice is unavailable, use dried herb pounded into powder, two qian).
The above three ingredients are mixed evenly and taken at once, without time restriction.
Zhimu Tang for treating Liver Huang:
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, baked, half liang), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove seedlings), Yin Chen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted and crushed), Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix, fried), Bie Jia (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum, remove skirt, vinegar-roasted, each 3 fen).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 5 qian bi per dose. Add 1.5 sheng of water and one hundred grains of Chi (Sojae Preparata), decoct together until 0.7 sheng remains, strain, add half he of refined lard, mix well, and take warm before meals. The goal is to induce vomiting or diarrhea.
Spleen Huang Third
The patient has bluish discoloration on both cheeks, visible veins, yellow eyes, blue gums, black lips with sores, whole-body yellow color, coal-like substance in the nose, abdominal distension and fullness, inability to eat, and constipation. This is Spleen Huang. First, cauterize the blue veins on the cheeks. Then cauterize Pishu (BL20) and Yindu (ST19) points. If ineffective, moxibustion is applied to Pishu (BL20) for one hundred cones. Administer Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction).
Zhu Ling (Polypori Sclerotium, remove black skin), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and fried), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 1 liang each), Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang).
The above five ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 5 qian bi per dose. Add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.7 sheng remains, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach.
For treating Spleen Huang with distension, Qi rushing to the chest and diaphragm, and large intestine obstruction, use Yanmi Jian (Salt and Honey Decoction):
Yan (Salt, pounded powder, half liang), Mi (Honey, two he), Zao Jia (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, pounded powder, 1 fen).
The above three ingredients: first put salt into a ding (cauldron), then add honey and Zao Jia powder. Simmer over low heat until it can form pills. Cool and roll into pills the size of jujube pits. Coat with Ni Fen (Calomelas). Insert into the anus. After a long time, bowel movement becomes unobstructed.
Lung Huang Fourth
The patient has a dry mouth, retracted tongue, red eyes, and nasal bleeding. First cauterize the soles of the feet. Then cauterize Xinshu (BL12), Baihui (GV20), Tianchuang (SI16), Lilian, Feishu (BL13), and Tiantan. If ineffective, moxibustion is applied to Feishu (BL13), Qimen (LR14), and Qihai (CV6) for one hundred cones. If there is irritability, thirst, desire to drink water, and difficulty with defecation, administer Huangxiao Tang (Rhubarb and Niter Decoction).
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and fried), Xiao Shi (Nitrumsitum, crushed, half liang each).
The above two ingredients are mixed evenly. Add two sheng of water, decoct until one sheng remains, strain, and divide into two warm doses on an empty stomach.
Kidney Huang Fifth
The patient has cold feet, blue-green face and eyes, cold body, hardness below the umbilicus, rapid breathing rushing to the heart. First cauterize Shenshu (BL23). Then cauterize Qimen (LR14), Qihai (CV6), Zu Yangming (Stomach Meridian points), palms of both hands, Tianchuang (SI16), and Baihui (GV20). If ineffective, moxibustion is applied to Qihai (CV6), Xialian below, and Shenshu (BL23) for one hundred cones. Observe the patient: if speech is heavy but breathing is regular, the condition is treatable. If the patient gasps three times and inhalation fails, the condition is incurable. Apply moxibustion to thirty-seven cones between the two breasts. If ineffective, administer Jishen Yin (Chicken and Ginseng Drink).
Ji Zi (Galli Ovum, one egg, shell removed), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Mi (Honey, one he), Sheng Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Recensis Juice, half he), Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 fen, ground together with the egg).
The above five ingredients: first decoct Ren Shen, Sheng Jiang, and Mi in one sheng of water until seven he remain. Strain, add Ji Zi and Po Xiao, mix, and boil for five to seven boils. Take on an empty stomach at once.
For treating patients with spasm and stiffness of hands and feet, and difficulty sleeping, Yun Tai Yin (Brassica Juncea Seed Drink):
Yun Tai Zi (Brassicae Junceae Semen, 1 liang), Wo Ju Zi (Lactucae Semen, 1 liang).
The above two ingredients are ground into a paste. Add one sheng of fresh well-water, mix, filter through raw silk to extract juice, and take at once.
Ghost Huang Sixth
The patient does not sweat, becomes increasingly lethargic and heavy, experiences abdominal distension, black lips, whole-body yellowing, hallucinates seeing ghosts, and speaks names of ancient people. This is Ghost Huang. Cauterize Zhongwan (CV12). Perform moxibustion for fourteen cones (two sevens). Then cauterize the back. Moxibustion is applied to Shangxin for seven cones (one seven). Also cauterize Xinshu (BL12), Ganshu (BL18), and Shenshu (BL23). If improving, the whole body turns red, sweat flows like rain, and breathing becomes regular. This indicates treatability. If the body is blue, pulse gradually becomes faint, and Stomach pulse disappears, the condition is incurable. If these signs are absent, administer Longchi Tang (Dragon Tooth Decoction).
Longchi (Dent Draconis, 1 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, remove heart and bake, 1 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, remove heart, 3 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted and crushed, 1 fen).

The patient prefers lying facing light, seeks shoes to get up, body is completely cold, flesh color is dark grey/black, cries and weeps in sleep, or speaks madly and irrationally. This is Jian Huang. First cauterize the palm. Then cauterize between the third fingers. Perform moxibustion for seven cones (one seven). Then cauterize Qihai (CV6), Shangwan (CV13), Renzhong (GV26), and Shenting (GV24). If ineffective, moxibustion is applied to Xialian on the back for one hundred cones. Observe the patient: if there is swelling of the heart and feet, and sudden turning to peek at people, the condition is incurable. If these signs are absent, administer Fushen Tang (Poria Cocos Decoction).
Fu Shen (Poria Cum Radix, remove wood), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, fried, 1 liang each), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, roasted, cracked, remove navel and skin, half liang), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, roasted, 1 fen).
