Commentary states: The "Three Worms" (San Chong) also belong to the category of the "Nine Worms" (Jiu Chong), specifically referring to Ascaris lumbricoides (Hui Chong, 蛔虫), Red Worms (Chi Chong, 赤虫), and Pinworms (Nao Chong, 蛲虫). The diseases they induce are more severe than those caused by other types of worms. Ascaris lumbricoides is also called the "Long Worm" (Chang Chong, 长虫), measuring about one chi in length; when active, it causes vomiting of clear fluid, and if the pain radiates to the heart, it can be fatal. Red Worms resemble raw meat; when active, they cause borborygmus (intestinal rumbling). Pinworms are extremely minute, resembling vegetable larvae, residing between the large and small intestines (Tong Chang, 胴肠); a large number can lead to hemorrhoids, and in extreme cases, leprosy-like conditions (Lai, 癞), or various carbuncles, sores, tinea, and scabies. Their manifestations are highly variable. Given such severe harm caused by the Three Worms, ancient physicians certainly treated them separately, implying profound therapeutic intent.
