Discussion: Regarding joint pain throughout the body caused by wind-stroke (Zhong Feng, stroke/paralysis due to wind), it arises from physical deficiency leading to the invasion of wind pathogen. The wind pathogen strikes the joints, causing the tendons and vessels of the entire body to become contracted and painful, with alternating chills and fever, and inability to flex or extend the limbs. This is all due to the weakness of true qi (Zhen Qi, vital energy) which cannot withstand the wind pathogen; the struggle between true qi and evil pathogen results in pain.
For treating hand and foot contracture, joint pain throughout the body, vexation, heat, restlessness, aversion to cold, and loss of appetite after several days due to wind-stroke, use the Modified San Huang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction):
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [1 liang 2 qian, roots and nodes removed, boiled to remove foam, dried]
Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, 独活) [1 liang, rhizome removed]
Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) [0.5 liang]
Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛) [1 fen, seedlings and leaves removed]
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [3 qian, black heart removed]
The above five herbs are crushed like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 6 qian bi, boiled in 2 zhan of water until 1 zhan remains. Strain and take on an empty stomach. One dose induces slight sweating; two doses induce profuse sweating.
Li Fen (Oyster Shell Powder)
For treating body and joint pain, limb weakness, hemiplegia due to wind-stroke, and postpartum wind-stroke, use Qianghuo Tang (Notopterygium Decoction):
Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) [rhizome removed]
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) [bark removed]
Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shu Dihuang, 熟地黄) [dried]
Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 芍药)
Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) [crushed]
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [roots and nodes removed, boiled to remove foam]
The above eight herbs are crushed like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 5 qian bi, boiled with 1 zhan of water and 1 zhan of wine until 1 zhan remains. Strain and take warm. Three times daily and once at night, without restriction on timing.
For treating joint pain throughout the body, dizziness, headache, high fever, limb pain, and shoulder/back stiffness due to wind-stroke or cold damage (Shang Han, cold injury), use Qianghuo Tang (Notopterygium Decoction):
Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) [rhizome removed]
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) [bark removed]
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) [twigs removed, 0.5 liang each]
Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻)
Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Juhua, 甘菊花)
Inulae Flos (Xuanjinhua, 旋覆花)
Typhonii Rhizoma (Baifuzi, 白附子) [processed]
Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu/Cangzhu context implies Atractylodes, here likely Cangzhu based on previous mention but text says Shu/Bai Zhu split, assuming Atractylodis Rhizoma) [soaked in rice wash overnight, sliced, stir-fried, 0.5 jin each for Cangzhu; Bai Zhu dried, 0.5 jin]
The above seventeen herbs are crushed like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 3 qian bi, boiled with 1 zhan of water, adding 7 leaves of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷) and 3 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), until 0.7 portion remains. Strain and take warm.
For treating external wind pathogen causing soreness and pain throughout the body, headache, heavy body, generalized fever, rough breathing, and eye pain, use Shenzhu Tang (Divine Atractylodes Decoction):
Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) [crushed, 4 liang]
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草)
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [roots and nodes removed, 3 liang each]
Gleditsiae Fructus (Zhuyazaojia, 猪牙皂荚) [4 pods, skin and seeds removed]
The above four herbs are used raw, coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qian bi, boiled with 1 zhan of water until 0.7 portion remains. Strain and take warm at any time. Cover with thick blankets to induce sweating. Alternatively, add 3 cun of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白), 2 crushed Almondae Semen (Xingren, 杏仁), and 7 grains of Sojae Semen Preparatum (Chidou/Zhichi context implies Zhichi/Fermented Soybean, here Chidou is black bean but text says Chi Dou later, likely Zhichi/Douchi) [Note: Text says 'Chi' then 'Dou', likely Douchi], boil together for better effect.
For treating tendon, vessel, bone, and joint pain due to wind-stroke, use Sofeng Chen Tong San (Wind-Searching Pain-Chasing Powder):
Typhonii Rhizoma (Baifuzi, 白附子) [processed]
Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) [processed, cracked, skin and umbilicus removed]

Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma? No, Wild Wolf Poison (Yelangdu, 野狼毒)
Pyritum (Ziran Tong, 自然铜) [quench in vinegar]
Pheretima (Dilong, 地龙) [stir-fried, soil removed]
The above eight herbs are in equal parts, pounded and sieved into powder. Each dose is 0.5 to 1 qian bi, taken with scallion-wine or bean-leak wine on an empty stomach.
For treating limb and joint pain, and slurred speech due to wind-stroke, use Baihua She San (White Flower Snake Powder):
Bungarus Parvus? No, Bungarus multicinctus? Text says Baihua She (Baihuashe, 白花蛇) [soaked in wine, roasted, skin and bones removed, 2 liang]
Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Heshouwu, 何首乌) [black skin removed, sliced]

Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi, 蔓荆实)
The above seven herbs are pounded and sieved into powder. Each dose is 1 qian bi, taken with warm wine on an empty stomach and before sleep.
For treating joint pain throughout the body, alternating chills and fever, and inability to bend or stretch due to wind-stroke, use Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder):
