Discourse states: Chronic abdominal distension arises from the accumulation of cold qi within the abdomen, which contends with the qi of the zang-fu organs, remaining stagnant and unresolved over a long period. This is because the abdomen is the residence of extreme yin (the area most susceptible to yin pathogens). The Spleen and Stomach are referred to as the "granary officials" (organs responsible for receiving and transforming food and fluids). Now, when cold qi resides internally and contends with the qi of the zang-fu organs, it stagnates and accumulates without dispersing, thus causing chronic distension. Since the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, they find it difficult to rot and ripen water and grain. Therefore, if distension persists for a long time without resolving, it may lead to diseases involving phlegm-fluids (accumulation of pathological fluids) and dampness.
For treating chronic abdominal distension, fullness, and oppression: Dingxiang Wan Formula
Dingxiang (Clove), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 1 fen); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Gancao (Licorice Root) (stir-baked and crushed); Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (coarse skin removed, stir-baked with ginger juice); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (pao-processed). [Note: Text mentions "Chen Ju" likely implying Chenpi, but lists 11 ingredients total in summary while only listing some here explicitly or implying others were omitted in this excerpt]. These eleven ingredients are pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Honey is refined and used to form pills the size of bird eggs. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly before meals, and swallow with rice water.
For treating chronic abdominal distension with irritability and oppression, and indigestion: Houpo Wan Formula
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (coarse skin removed, coated with ginger juice and stir-baked until cooked); Dingxiang Pi (Clove Skin); Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex Radicis) (crushed and stir-baked); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (stir-baked); Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) (crushed).
These eight ingredients are pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Wheat paste is used to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take thirty pills per dose on an empty stomach, swallowing with tangerine peel decoction.
For treating chronic abdominal distension where cold qi accumulates and contends without dispersing: Chenjupi Tang Formula
Chenjupi (Tangerine Peel) (soaked in water, white pith removed, dried, 1 liang); Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (0.5 liang); Chifuling (Poria Cocos with Red Skin) (black skin removed); Binglang (Arecae Semen) (crushed); Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 3 fen, crushed).
[Note: Text lists five items but states "these eight ingredients", implying missing text or counting method]. Coarsely crush and sieve these ingredients. Take three qianbi per dose, add one cup of water, and one date-sized piece of smashed fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating chronic abdominal distension with qi pain that does not disperse: Taoren Wan Formula
Taoren (Pruni Persicae Semen) (scalded in water, skin and pointed ends removed, double-kernel ones stir-baked with bran and ground); Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (crushed and dried); Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) (red variety); Helile (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus) (roasted, use the skin); Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (coarse skin removed).
[Note: Text lists five items but states "these eight ingredients"]. Pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Refined honey is added, and the mixture is pounded three to two hundred times. Form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take twenty pills with warm wine at any time.
For treating chronic abdominal distension with qi stagnation and intestinal/colonic obstruction and dryness: Jupi Wan Formula
Chenjupi (Tangerine Peel) (soaked in water, white pith removed, dried); Qingjupi (Green Tangerine Peel) (soaked in water, white pith removed, dried); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (pao-processed); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (crushed and stir-baked); Jingsanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma) (pao-processed and crushed).
These seven ingredients are pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Vinegar-cooked wheat paste is used to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take fifteen pills after meals with ginger water, increasing up to twenty pills.
For treating chronic abdominal distension with chest and back pain: Binglang Tang Formula
Binglang (Arecae Semen) (crushed); Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) (pulp removed, stir-baked with bran); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (stir-baked); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Chi Shao Yao (Red Paeoniae Radix); Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
These six ingredients are coarsely crushed and sieved. Take three qianbi per dose, add one cup of water, and one date-sized piece of smashed fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to seven-tenths. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating chronic abdominal distension with weakness and loss of appetite: Muxiang Wan Formula
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix); Chenjupi (Tangerine Peel) (soaked in water, white pith removed, dried); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang); Binglang (Arecae Semen) (crushed, 1 liang); Laifuzi (Brassicae Semens) (lightly stir-fried, 2 liang).
These five ingredients are pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Refined honey is used to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take twenty pills at any time, chewing them down with ginger water.
