Diagram of the Yisi Year (Yi Si Sui Tu)

Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Shaoyang Ministerial-Fire governs the Earth (Zai Quan), and the central movement is Less Shang Metal. The Metal movement of the year is deficient, causing the Qi transformation and physiological operations to lag behind the natural timing. Its manifestations are identical to Zheng Jiao (the balanced Wood movement year); all conditions are equivalent to a Zheng Sui (standard year), with Qi transformation and operations aligning with the Tian Fu (Heavenly Match) year. Wind transformation prevails above; on the left, there is a transformation of scorching heat, and on the right, a transformation of storage/concealment. Consequently, the Heavenly Qi is disturbed and its administration is chaotic. Bitter transformation is constrained by the Earthly Qi; on the left, there is a white transformation, and on the right, a soft/smooth transformation. Thus, the Earthly Qi is upright and its commands are swift. Wind arises from high distances, followed by intense heat. Clouds gather towards the Rain Mansion, allowing Humidity transformation to proceed. Wind and Fire share the same virtue, corresponding above to the Year Star (Jupiter/Xing) and Yinghuo Star (Mars). The corresponding grains are green (Cang) and red/dan (Dan). Among the intermediate grains, those referred to as Tai Gong (Earth) and Tai Yu (Water) experience depletion in Wen Jiao (Wood) and Pin Yu (Water). Wind, Dryness, Fire, and Heat alternate in victory and retaliation. Hibernating insects emerge, flowing water does not freeze. Heat diseases prevail in the lower part, wind diseases in the upper part, and the forms of wind-dryness victory/retaliation appear in the middle. The victory and retaliation of Heat transformation and Cold transformation are the same, which is referred to as the days of pathogenic Qi transformation. The standard degrees of transformation are: Wind 8, Clear/Dry 4, Fire 2. Hair-bearing creatures remain quiet, feathered creatures breed; these are the suitable organisms for the year. Shell-bearing creatures are depleted, and cold toxins do not generate; this is restricted by the Earthly Qi. However, Wood is the Heavenly Qi, Fire is the Earthly Qi, and Metal movement is in the center. The Earthly Qi surpasses the Movement, and the Movement transformation surpasses the Heavenly Qi, resulting in weak Heavenly Qi and abundant Earthly Qi. One should nourish the source of transformation to assist Wood Qi, and simultaneously support the annual movement, preventing pathogenic factors from overcoming the righteous Qi. The appropriate medicinal and dietary transformations are: Upper [part] uses Pungent-Cool, Middle uses Sour-Harmonizing, Lower uses Salty-Cold. This constitutes the appropriateness of medicines and foods.

Before the midpoint of the year, the Heavenly Qi is governed by Jueyin. Jueyin transforms through its central Qi (Shaoyang Ministerial-Fire). When wind transforms into fire during this period, it indicates the harmony of Heavenly Qi. If Wind excess prevails, the vast sky becomes dusty and dim, clouds and objects become chaotic, cold generates Spring Qi, flowing water does not freeze, and people suffer from stomach pain at the epigastrium directly below the heart, radiating upward to support both hypochondria, obstruction of the diaphragm and throat, inability to swallow food, stiffness of the tongue root, vomiting after eating, cold diarrhea with abdominal distension, loose stools, masses (Jia), and water retention/obstruction. The disease originates in the Spleen. Diagnosis focuses on the Chongyang pulse of the Foot [Yangming Stomach Meridian]. The treatment method should be balanced with Pungent-Cool, assisted by Bitter-Sweet, using Sweet to relieve tension, and Sour to drain.

After the midpoint of the year, the Earthly Qi is governed by Shaoyang. Shaoyang's transformation follows its Root (Fire). If Fire excess occurs internally, flames shine across the suburbs, cold and heat alternate, and people suffer from profuse discharge of red and white material, lower abdominal pain, red urine, and in severe cases, bloody stools. The treatment should employ Salty-Cold, assisted by Bitter-Pungent, using Sour to astringe, and Bitter to disperse.

The annual movement is Metal deficiency, recorded as "Cong Ge" (Following Change), which signifies the interruption of harvesting. The harvesting Qi lags, while the generating Qi expands. The virtue of growth harmonizes, Fire administration is proclaimed, and myriad species flourish. The Qi rises, its function is restless and urgent, its movement manifests as ringing in ears, dizziness, and convulsions/fainting. Its onset includes cough and wheezing. The pathogenic factor injures the Lung. Its transformation involves the element it cannot overcome (Fire). If summer brings oppressive, steaming heat, winter will respond with strict, freezing solemnity. If summer brings scorching, burning changes, autumn will retaliate with hail, frost, and snow. The disaster is in the West, the affected organ is the Lung. The disease resides internally in the chest, hypochondria, shoulders, and back, and externally in the skin and hair. Retaliation brings sudden heavy cold rain, hail, frost, and snow that kill living things. Yin cold reverses and blocks, Yang Qi floats upward, causing headache in the head and vertex extending to the fontanelle with fever, and in severe cases, heart pain. Treatment should use Sour to harmonize and regulate the middle.

First Qi Period: From the beginning of Si hour on the Great Cold day of the Jiachen year to the beginning of Mao hour on the Spring Equinox day of this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Principal Position is Tai Jiao (Wood), the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, and the central view is Metal movement. Qi and Movement reside together in the Wood position, interacting with Jueyin to enact Spring commands. Metal and Wood Qi are equal. Cold begins to purify, killing Qi arrives. People suffer from cold on the lower right. Treat the Guest of Yangming with Sour to tonify, Pungent to drain, and Bitter to clear. Annual grain should be green (Cang), intermediate grain should be millet (Shu).

Second Qi Period: From the exact Mao hour on the Spring Equinox day to the exact Chou hour on the Grain Full (Xiao Man) day, totaling over 60 days. The Principal Position is Shao Zheng (Fire), the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, and the central view is Metal movement. Metal and Water are compatible. Cold does not depart, flowers and snow melt into ice, killing Qi enacts transformation, frost descends, grass tops wither. Cold rain arrives frequently, Yang Qi recovers and transforms. People suffer from heat in the middle. Treat the Guest of Taiyang with Bitter to tonify, Salty to drain, Bitter to firm, and Pungent to moisten. Annual grain should be green (Cang), intermediate grain should be broomcorn millet (Ji).

Third Qi Period: From the beginning of Yin hour on the Grain Full day to the beginning of Zi hour on the Great Heat (Da Shu) day, totaling over 60 days. The Principal Position is Shao Zheng (Fire), the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, and the central view is Metal movement. Fire overcomes Metal, Metal overcomes Wood. Heavenly administration spreads, wind rises at times. People suffer from tearing, tinnitus, tremors, and dizziness. Treat the Guest of Jueyin with Pungent to tonify, Sour to drain, and Sweet to relax. Annual grain should be green (Cang), intermediate grain should be rice (Dao).

Fourth Qi Period: From the exact Zi hour on the Great Heat day to the exact Xu hour on the Autumn Equinox day, totaling over 60 days. The Principal Position is Tai Gong (Earth), the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, and the central view is Metal movement. Fire overcomes Metal. Muggy heat arrives, dampness and heat contend, fighting in the upper left. People suffer from jaundice and swelling. Treat the Guest of Shaoyin with Salty to tonify, Sweet to drain, and Sour to astringe. Annual grain should be red (Dan), intermediate grain should be beans (Dou).

Fifth Qi Period: From the beginning of Hai hour on the Autumn Equinox day to the beginning of You hour on the Minor Snow (Xiao Xue) day, totaling over 60 days. The Principal Position is Less Shang (Metal), the Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, and the central view is Metal movement. The annual Metal movement is in its proper position, harmonizing with Earth. Dryness and Humidity transform alternately in superiority. Deep Yin spreads, cold air reaches the body, wind and rain occur. Regulate the Guest of Taiyin with Sweet to tonify, Bitter to drain, and Sweet to relax. Annual grain should be red (Dan), intermediate grain should be hemp seeds (Ma).

Final Qi Period: From the exact You hour on the Minor Snow day to the exact Wei hour on the Great Cold day, totaling over 60 days. The Principal Position is Tai Yu (Water), the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, and the central view is Metal movement. Feared Fire commands, Yang Qi greatly transforms. Hibernating insects emerge, flowing water does not freeze, Earthly Qi erupts, grass grows, people feel comfortable. Diseases include warm epidemics. Treat the Guest of Shaoyang with Salty to tonify, Sweet to drain, and Salty... (text incomplete). Annual grain should be red (Dan), intermediate grain should be beans (Dou). This is the constant nature of the Six Qi.

In the transformation of annual Qi, if Heavenly Qi prevails, Yangming retaliates; if Earthly Qi prevails, Taiyang retaliates. Their treatments follow their respective victory and retaliation methods.
