Discussion states: After childbirth, during the postpartum period, if diet and daily life deviate from regular patterns, causing blood and qi to fail in receiving nourishment, deficiency of blood leads to fever; deficiency of qi leads to chills; when both blood and qi are deficient, chills and fever alternate. The body becomes increasingly emaciated, hence termed "Rulao" (postpartum chronic deficiency syndrome due to improper care). Additionally, incomplete expulsion of lochia after childbirth can also cause this condition, manifesting as alternating chills and fever, and stabbing pain in the waist and abdomen. In severe cases, appetite is lost, and skin and muscles fail to thrive.
For treating postpartum Rulao, with the body becoming increasingly withered and emaciated, alternating chills and fever, headache, body aches, bitter taste in the mouth, and dry tongue, use Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder):
Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, remove coarse bark) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, remove coarse bark, coat with fresh ginger juice and roast) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, remove sprouts) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, cut and stir-fry) Ziwan (Astagi Herba, remove soil and bake dry)
The above twelve ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Each dose is two qianbi (approx. 6g), mixed with ten slices of roasted pig liver while hot, chewed thoroughly, and washed down with warm wine. Taken three times daily.
For treating postpartum neglect of care, resulting in blood and qi deficiency, increasing emaciation, less chills and more fever, irritability, thirst, cough with counterflow of qi, phlegm obstruction, and reduced appetite, use Chaihu Renshen Tang (Bupleurum and Ginseng Decoction):
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, remove sprouts) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Sheng Gan Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, dried, each 3 fen) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, cut and stir-fry) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Ziwan (Astagi Herba, remove sprouts and soil) Sanggen (Mori Cortex, one piece, processed until cracked, remove coarse bark)
The above twelve ingredients are cut like hemp seeds. Each dose is three qianbi, boiled with one sheng (approx. 200ml) of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and one broken jujube, until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm, at any time.
