Commentary states: Whenever one falls, is knocked down, or suffers blunt trauma, the heart qi (Heart Qi) within is disturbed internally. The circulation of Ying and Wei (Defensive) Qi and Blood fails to reach its destination, leading to various ailments. If there is sudden injury to the chest and hypochondrium, Qi stagnates in the Huang membrane (the membrane between the heart and diaphragm), damaged blood enters the Stomach, accumulates, and remains unresolved. In severe cases, this manifests as coughing up saliva with blood or hematemesis. The treatment principle should be to harmonize Ying and Wei Qi, soothe the middle Jiao (Middle Burner) stagnation, and expel the damaged blood.
