Commentary: Blood and Qi nourish and moisten, externally wetting the Couli (skin texture and pores), thereby making the body form full and solid. After Han (sweating) or Xia (purging) treatments for Shanghan (Cold Damage syndrome), blood and Qi become insufficient, and the Zang-Fu organs become deficient and cold. Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) become stagnant, and Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) fail to circulate smoothly. Muscles lack nourishment and prosperity, thus causing flaccid edema of the body. If both the Spleen and Kidney are deficient, failing to control water metabolism, water fluids overflow into the skin, transforming into Shuiqi (Water Qi) edema and distension.
