Discussion states: Spring is warm, summer is hot, autumn is cool, and winter is cold; these are the normal climates of the four seasons. If abnormal climate occurs out of season, and people contract this pathogenic factor, regardless of age, the resulting diseases present with similar symptoms. This is referred to as "Shi Qi" (Seasonal Epidemic Pathogen). For instance, spring should be warm but turns cold; summer should be hot but turns cold; autumn should be cool but turns hot; winter should be cold but turns warm—all these cases fall under this category. The clinical manifestations resemble those of Shang Han (Cold Damage) and Wen Bing (Warm Diseases), but for syndromes treatable by sweating or purging methods, the therapeutic intensity should be milder compared to Shang Han and Wen Bing.
For Shi Qi persisting for two to three days without resolution, presenting with headache, high fever, and aversion to cold, use Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction):
Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed, 1 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 2 liang), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Vetus, soaked in water, white pith removed, dried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, sliced).
The above seven ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi (approx. 9-15g depending on era/measure). Add one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm.
For Shi Qi causing headache and high fever, use Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction):
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 2 liang), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, stems removed, 1 liang), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed, 0.5 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi. Add 1.5 zhan of water and a piece of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) the size of a date (crushed). Decoct until reduced to 80%, strain, and take warm. Time is not restricted.
For Shi Qi causing high fever, headache, and vomiting/reversal of qi, use Qianhu Tang (Peucedani Decoction):
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, dried), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved into flakes), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 liang each), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 2 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi. Add 1.5 zhan of water, half a portion of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, crushed), and 2 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, cut). Decoct until reduced to 80%, strain, and take warm.
For Shi Qi causing headache, high fever, and irritative pain in limbs, use Qisheng Tang (Seven Sages Decoction):
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 3 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, fried, 2 liang), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, washed with hot water, white pith removed, dried), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, crushed, 1 liang each), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, fried, 1.5 liang), Shanyinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed, 2 liang).
