It is stated that the condition of "grain thorn" (Guzei, a foreign body or irritation in the throat) growing in the throat manifests as nodular swelling and pain in the pharynx, causing dysphagia and a sensation of obstruction and stifling during eating. This arises from short awns of grain being mistaken for rice; their rough texture rubs against the pharynx like a fishbone stuck fast, neither ascending nor descending. If aggravated by wind-heat pathogens, the nodular swelling will not subside. If not treated urgently, it can also be fatal.
Shengma Decoction (Cinnamon Twig-like Herb Decoction) for treating grain thorn in the throat with obstructive stifling upon swallowing:
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, crushed), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, coarse bark removed, honey-fried), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed, baked, each 1 liang), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Qianhu (Radium Peucedani, rhizome head removed), Daqing (Folium Isatidis, each 3 qian), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, ground separately, added after decoction).
The above nine ingredients, except Mangxiao, are coarsely pounded and sieved. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi (measurements), decocted in one zhan (unit of volume) of water until reduced to 6 fen. The dregs are strained off, and half a qianbi of Mangxiao powder is added and stirred evenly. It is taken warm after meals, three times daily.
Shexiang Decoction (Belamcanda Decoction) for treating grain thorn in the throat with obstructive stifling upon swallowing:
Shexiang (Rhizoma Belamcandae), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, each 3 qian), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, crushed and fried, 1 liang), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, crushed, each 3 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried and crushed, half 1 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, decocted in one zhan of water with seven slices of Zhu Ye (Folium Bambusae) until reduced to 6 fen. The dregs are strained off, and it is taken warm after meals. If bowel unblocking is desired, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 1 liang, stopping when stool becomes loose.
Ruxiang Pill (Frankincense Pill) for treating grain thorn in the throat, which can be fatal if not treated urgently:
Ruxiang (Resina Frankincense, half 1 fen), Sha (Realgar, 1 fen), Hupo (Succinum), Songzhi (Pini Resina, each half 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are each ground into powder, mixed uniformly again, and melted with Baicha (White Beeswax) to form pills the size of a chicken's head. Each dose is one pill, held in the mouth to dissolve and swallow the saliva, continuing until recovery.
Formula for treating grain thorn impacting the throat, with sudden swelling of both cheeks and under the tongue, and obstructive stifling and pain upon swallowing:
Fanshi (Alumen, raw use).
Grind this single ingredient into powder, apply sparingly to the swollen area, continuing until recovery. Spit out any saliva produced.
Another formula:
Mayaxiao (Saltpeter, ground).
Grind this single ingredient into powder, wrap half a qianbi in cotton, hold in the mouth to dissolve and swallow the saliva, continuing until recovery.
Another formula:
First puncture the area with a needle to allow black blood to flow out, then hold a small piece of Mayaxiao in the mouth. Swallowing the saliva will lead to recovery.
Fuling Powder (Poria Powder) for treating grain thorn in the throat with nodular swelling, pain, and obstructive stifling affecting diet:
Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Skin, black skin removed), Guanzhong (Rhizoma Cibotii), Suosharen (Fructus Amomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, each 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Use one qianbi per dose, sprinkle into the throat, and wash down with water. Effect is immediate.
Xiangya Powder (Ivory Powder) for treating grain thorn in the throat, feeling like a stuck bone, neither ascending nor descending, with pain and obstructive stifling:
Xiangya Mo (Powdered Ivory, 1 fen), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, large pieces about 1 cun), Huashi (Talcum, half 1 fen), Lvdou Fen (Powder of Phaseoli Semen, 2 liang), Yujin (Radix Curcumae, small pieces half a block), Ruxiang (Resina Frankincense, ground), Pengsha (Borax, ground), Shexiang (Moschus, ground, each half 1 fen).
The above eight ingredients are pounded and ground into a powder. Each dose is half a qianbi, mixed with fresh drawn water and taken orally.
Wuweizi Decoction (Schisandra Decoction) for treating grain thorn in the throat with nodular swelling, pain, and interference with diet:

The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, decocted in one zhan of water until reduced to 5 fen. The dregs are strained off, and it is taken warm, three times daily, at any time.
