Commentary states: Blood naturally prefers warmth and dislikes cold. Warmth promotes smooth circulation, while cold causes stagnation. In cases of abortion during pregnancy where lochia (residual blood after childbirth) fails to discharge, it is due to pre-existing wind-cold pathogens in the body lodging in the uterus (Bao Zang). The cold pathogen clashes with the retained blood, preventing it from descending. This manifests as alternating chills and fever, fullness and pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, dry mouth and thirst, and vexation in the hands and feet. If the retained blood follows rebellious Qi upward to harass the Heart, it may cause delirious speech or unconsciousness. The pathological changes are numerous and incalculable. It is advisable to promptly treat with blood-breaking and Qi-moving medications until the blood discharges.
