Commentary states: Children's bodies possess wind-heat, with the Spleen and Lungs functioning poorly. Alternatively, dampness pathogen combats with the skin, causing stagnation of Qi and Blood. The skin becomes tough and thickened, transforming into various tinea (Xuan) conditions. Some are oblong, some round, gradually enlarging. Symptoms decrease slightly in cold and become itchy and stuffy in warmth; scratching yields yellow exudate. Others occur on the face, where the skin is dry and scaly like fish scales, termed "infantile tinea" (Nai Xuan). This arises from milk residue soaking the skin during nursing; washing with milk again will lead to recovery.
Formula for Cinnabar Paste (Ci Huang Gao) to treat infantile tinea with wind and itching:
Realgar (Ci Huang, ground), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, remove stamens), Herba Pogostemonis (Mangcao), Fructus Cnidii (Shechuangzi, stir-fried), Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbai, remove rough bark and stir-baked), Radix Sophorae Flavescentis (Kushen), Semen Toosendan (Wuyi, stir-fried, each half liang), Radix Veratri (Lilu), Natrii Nitras (Xiaoshi, ground, each one fen), Resina Pini (Songzhi, two and a half liang), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren, soaked in hot water, peel and remove tips and twin kernels, separately ground into paste, one liang).
The above eleven ingredients, except for Ci Huang, Songzhi, and Xingren, are crushed and sieved into powder. Take half a jin of lard from the twelfth lunar month, mix with Songzhi in a pan, boil until bubbling, add Xingren, then add the various medicinal powders, stir evenly until congealed into a paste. Before each use, wash the area with vinegar water, wipe dry, and apply. Three times daily.
