It is stated that infantile wind-induced pruritic urticaria (Feng Sao Yin Zhen) arises from wind pathogenic factors invading the Cou Li (skin texture and pores), struggling with Ying Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), and transforming into heat. The heat steams and scatters within the muscles, overflows onto the skin, and transforms into urticaria. The presentation involves rashes appearing and disappearing intermittently, itching occurring at irregular intervals, bleeding upon scratching, and unceasing pruritus; hence it is named "wind-induced pruritic urticaria." Red rashes indicate Heat syndrome, while white rashes indicate Cold syndrome; therefore, therapeutic principles must be carefully examined.
Formula of Five Shen (Wu Shen San) for treating infantile lung-wind pruritus, urticaria, and tinea:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zi Shen (Stemona Radix), Bai Fu Zi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Praeparata, prepared until cracked, 2 fen each), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix, crushed), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang each), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, crushed), Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix or Adenophorae Radix, crushed, 1 liang each), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, 3 fen).
The above eight herbs are pounded together and sieved to make a powder. For infants aged 50 to 100 days, administer one "zi" dose per time; for toddlers aged 200 days to one year, administer one and a half "zi" doses per time, mixed with milk juice. For children aged two to three years, administer half a "qian bi" dose per time, mixed with decocted Bo He Jin Yin Tang (Mint and Honeysuckle Decoction) or Jujube Decoction, taken on an empty stomach and in the afternoon. If the nursing mother takes it, administer one "qian bi" dose per time, mixed with warm wine.
