Commentary states: The eyes are the manifestation of the essence of the Zang-Fu organs and serve as the external indicator of the Liver. In children, heat within the Zang-Fu organs combats with phlegm-fluids in the diaphragm, causing Qi to fail to circulate freely. Heat steams and soaks into the Liver; when the Liver Meridian is affected by heat, blood vessels become congested and stagnant, rushing upward along the meridian to the eyes, thus causing redness and pain. If not treated promptly, severe heat may generate nebulae (corneal opacity or cataracts).
