It is stated that the Kidney governs the bone marrow of the body, and the brain is the Sea of Marrow. When Kidney Qi is harmonious, the bone marrow is abundant; when the bone marrow is abundant, the cranial fontanelles (the soft spots on an infant's skull where the bones have not yet fused) develop fully. If Kidney Qi is insufficient, the bone marrow will not be充盈 (filled). Although the child grows older, the sutures of the head remain open, hence it is called Jie Lu (Split Skull), also known as Xie Jie (Open Fontanelle).
For treating pediatric Jie Lu with a large fontanelle, persistent heat in the body, sweating on the head and face, abdominal distension, cough, upward rushing of Qi with shoulder breathing (dyspnea involving accessory muscles), foot claudication with crossed shins, and inability to walk by age three: Zhongru Wan Formula. Zhongru (Calculus Lapidis, powdered), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-veined), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, dried and roasted), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, ground), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and chopped), Qihua (Lac Japonicae Resina, each 1 fen).
The above six herbs are pounded and sieved into powder. Using dog brain marrow as a binder, form pills the size of sesame seeds. Each dose consists of 2 to 3 pills, taken with rice water. Administer once in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. Dosage should be adjusted according to the child's size and condition. An alternative method uses pig brain marrow for pill formation.
For treating pediatric Xie Jie (Open Fontanelle): Xixin San Formula.
Xixin (Asari Radix, de-stemmed and de-leaved), Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, de-barked), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed, each 1 fen).
