It is stated that when a newborn infant is delivered, they should first be bathed, and then the umbilical cord should be severed. After severing the cord, it must be sealed and wrapped with prepared mugwort (Shu Ai), or moxibustion should be applied for several moxa cones. Care must be taken to prevent exposure to dampness.
Regarding the condition where the umbilicus fails to dry: Bai Fan San (Alum Powder) Formula
- Shi Fan (Calcined Alum Ash)
- Long Gu (Fossilized Bones, each 1 fen)
The above two ingredients are finely ground and applied to the umbilicus until healed.
For treating neonatal umbilical wind with discharge: Gan Cao San (Licorice Powder) Formula
- Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, chopped)
- Lou Gu (Toadfish, roasted until scorched, each 1 fen)
The above two ingredients are pounded and sieved into a powder, which is sprinkled onto the umbilicus until cured.
For treating redness, swelling, and continuous discharge from the umbilicus: Bai Shi Zhi San (Halloysitum Roseum Powder) Formula
- Bai Shi Zhi (Halloysitum Roseum, 1 liang)
The above single ingredient is ground into a powder, warmed by heating, and patted onto the umbilicus three times daily.
For treating an umbilicus that remains wet beyond one month of age:
- Xia Ma (Toads, 5 specimens)
The above single ingredient is calcined to ash and applied to the umbilicus three times daily.
For treating umbilical dampness causing swelling, red discharge, and frequent crying: Dang Gui Fen (Angelica Sinensis Powder) Formula
- Dang Gui (Powdered Angelica Sinensis Root)
- Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate, each 0.5 liang)
The above two ingredients are mixed and ground evenly, applied to the umbilicus, and simultaneously treated with hot cotton wadding compresses until the crying ceases.
For treating umbilical dampness via hot compress:
Take Yan Chi (Salted Fermented Soybeans), pound them into cakes the size of a coin, heat them on a new tile until hot, and apply alternating hot compresses. Alternatively, Huang Bo powder can be applied. Another prescription uses 2 liang of salt and 2 he of fermented soybeans, pounded together into cakes for hot compresses.
For treating chronic umbilical ulcers that fail to heal:
- GAN Xia Ma (Dried Toad, 1 large specimen, calcined to ash)
- Bai Fan (Alum, 1 fen, calcined to ash)
The above two ingredients are finely ground; a small amount is applied to the lesion until healed.
For treating umbilical ulcers with persistent non-drying discharge: Huang Bo San (Phellodendron Bark Powder) Formula
- Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, coarse bark removed, 1.5 liang, powdered)
- Fu Xia Mo (Soot from the pot bottom, 3 fen, ground)
- Luan Fa (Tangled Hair, burned to ash, 1 fen, ground)
The above three ingredients are ground together until fine and uniform; a small amount is applied sparingly to the area.
For treating discharge from the umbilicus: Guo Lao San (Old Man's Friend Powder) Formula
- Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, chopped, 1 fen)
- Dang Gui (Baked Angelica Sinensis Root)
- Qian Dan (Minium, ground, each 0.5 fen)
The above three ingredients: Gan Cao and Dang Gui are pounded and sieved into a powder, then mixed with Qian Dan and ground until fine and uniform. This is applied to the umbilicus three times daily.
For treating umbilical dampness persisting for over a month: San Hui San (Three Ashes Powder) Formula
- Gan Xia Ma (Dried Toad, calcined to ash)
- Bai Fan (Alum, calcined to ash)
- Zao Jia Zi (Gleditsia Sinensis Seed, calcined to ash, each 1 fen)
The above three ingredients are finely ground and applied in small amounts to the umbilicus.
For treating chronic umbilical non-healing with redness, swelling, pus, and clear fluid: Dang Gui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder) Formula
- Dang Gui (Baked Angelica Sinensis Root)
The above single ingredient is ground into an extremely fine powder and applied sparingly to the umbilicus frequently. It is recorded that a child suffered from umbilical dampness for more than fifty days; after one application of this powder, it dried up. Later, due to urine entering the wound, the condition recurred, but a second application resulted in a cure.
