[Discussion] The Qi of Yin and Yang should originally remain in a state of harmony; imbalance leads to disease. "Jianbu" (Strenuous Tonification, using potent tonifying agents) is employed in emergencies for conditions where Yang Qi suddenly fails or True Qi suddenly collapses. It is also indicated for urgent treatment of various diseases such as Cold Syndromes in Shanghan (Cold Damage), where delay is not an option. Since human endowment is limited, excessive desires can lead to sudden onset of diseases, necessitating the support of Yang Qi to bolster weakness. Thus, formulas for strenuous tonification follow the principle stated in the *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine): "For treating disorders of the lower Jiao, the prescription should be swift; because the condition is urgent, the medicinal properties and flavors should be strong." This refers to this very concept.
[Indications] Strenuously tonifies all deficiency-cold syndromes.
[Formula: Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill)]
Lithii Sulfas (Sulfur) (20 liang of high-quality sulfur, ground into powder).
Take the above single herb, place it in a jar, and cover tightly. Collect one handful each of Ranunculus ternatus (Shilongru, Dog's Foot Grass) and Hydrocotyle javanica (Shuijiancao, Water Field Grass), pound them until mushy, then add one handful of yellow earth and pound evenly into a mud-like consistency. Use this mud to wrap the medicine jar to a thickness of about five to six fen, leaving only the mouth unwrapped. Place the jar on level ground, surround it with five jin of charcoal, and place one jin of ignited charcoal on top to burn. When the jar becomes red-hot, watch closely for green flames rising from the mouth. Upon seeing this, quickly move the fire away, cover thickly with three dou of wood ash to prevent air leakage, and wait until cool before removing the ash. Scrape off the mud. Repeat this process five times. If the firing is done correctly, the resulting product should have the fragrance of a boiled egg. For urgent use, two firings are sufficient. After completion, bury the furnace in clean soil overnight to remove fire toxicity, then take out and boil in water for twenty to thirty boils. Break the jar, retrieve the medicine, pound it, and add decocted rice paste. Grind with water until mud-like, then dry. For every one liang of medicine, mix with one liang of steamed bun soaked in water and squeezed dry, and pound a thousand times. Form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds, dry, and store. Administration: Whenever one feels slight constipation, reduced appetite, or chills and fever, quickly take fifty pills with warm rice gruel. Take once in the morning, noon, and evening. After taking one or two hundred pills, the disease should recede. Accumulations in the lower abdomen will be purged. On the next day, take one or two more doses until urine becomes clear. In normal times without illness, take twenty to thirty pills daily in the morning to prevent various diseases. If illness occurs, regardless of cold or heat, it is suitable to take this medicine, stopping when effective. Do not mix with other medicines, nor induce vomiting or diarrhea with other drugs. This medicine has natural tonifying and purging effects, differing from ordinary medicines. It can be taken by men, women, old, and young alike. For children with night crying, fright, milk injury with phlegm, or innocent dysentery, grind one fen of the medicine and administer with rice gruel twice daily. For adults with persistent dysentery, administer with decoction of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), or swallow the pills directly. For intestinal wind and hemorrhoids, take one qianbi of Petroelimi Radix (Baiqian) mixed with rice gruel. For knife wounds or malignant sores, apply the powder externally. For chronic Qi disorders, lung cold accumulation, Shanghan malaria, chest diaphragm obstruction, headache, and high fever, take generously. Shanghan diseases are often mismanaged by mediocre physicians who wrongly use purgatives or mistime sweating therapies, failing to distinguish Yin and Yang, leading to difficult recovery. Simply take this medicine, one or two hundred pills daily; do not be surprised if diarrhea occurs, as clearing the bowels indicates cure. This medicine treats various diseases; adjust dosage based on depth of pathology. Exclude skin diseases. Those already cured need not take more. Shilongru is also known as Gouti Cao (Dog's Foot Grass); Shuijiancao is also known as Shuitian Cao (Water Field Grass), growing in rice paddies, with a single stem and four flowers resembling the character 'Tian'. If these two herbs are unavailable, substitute with Leonuri Herba (Yimao Cao).
