Discussion: The disease of "mental restlessness and heat" (Xin Fan Re) is caused by an excess condition in the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. If there is a deficiency, it can also cause mental vexation due to deficiency (Xu Fan). *Shenghui Fang* only addresses excess-heat conditions. Generally, the Heart belongs to Fire and dislikes heat; when diseased, it easily generates internal heat. Heat causes stagnation of Qi and Blood, leading to irritability and inability to sleep peacefully. Symptoms include sores on the mouth and tongue, headache, and redness of the cheeks. In deficiency patterns, pathogenic heat attacks inward, disturbing the Shen (Spirit), which also results in irritability.
