It is discussed that after a seasonal epidemic disease (an acute febrile disease caused by contracting seasonal epidemic toxic qi), sudden redness, swelling, and pain of the eyes, or the formation of nebulae (corneal opacity or neovascularization lesions), occurs. This is due to the residual heat of the Liver, Heart, and Lung attacking upwards towards the eyes. Generally, the eyes receive the essence of the five Zang organs and are not exclusively attributed to the Liver; heat pathogens of the Heart and Lung can also invade them. Therefore, after a seasonal epidemic disease, if the residual toxins in the Zang-Fu organs are not fully cleared, they fumigate and manifest in the eyes. Alternatively, because the body is weak and has not yet recovered, consuming foods with hot-toxic properties can also cause eye diseases. Mild cases involve pain, while severe cases may lead to nebulous halos or seeing black spots (floaters or blurred vision) in front of the eyes. The treatment method especially emphasizes cautious diet and abstinence from sexual intercourse to achieve recovery. Otherwise, alternating attacks with decoctions will be of no benefit.
