Commentary: The toxic vapors from Dan Shi (ingestion of cinnabar and mineral drugs) attacking the eyes upward are caused by heat qi invading the Liver internally. The Liver opens into the eyes and relies on blood nourishment to enable vision. For those who ingest stone drugs, if regulation and adaptation are improper, their toxicity flows into the Liver, causing Ying Blood (nutritive blood) to become obstructed and stagnant. This stagnation surges upward to the eyes, resulting in redness and pain in both eyes, or the growth of Pterygium (wing-shaped fleshy growth). Treatment should not be delayed; if delayed, the momentum of the stone toxicity will penetrate and damage the pupil, causing the eyeball to protrude and ulcerate, making it difficult to treat.
