It is stated that only excessive movement and overdose are the origins of disease. Therefore, if the body's defensive qi (Zheng Qi) is not firmly maintained, pathogenic factors can invade. The use of five types of medicinal substances for internal treatment aims merely to ensure that pathogens do not overcome Zheng Qi. However, when using toxic drugs to attack pathogens, one need not exceed the dosage; exceeding it will instead damage Zheng Qi. Just as the five flavors nourish the body, slight excess can also cause harm; this is an inevitable principle.
