Discussion: Arrowheads coated with poison entering the skin and muscles cause shortness of breath, suffocation, lockjaw (trismus), and dry lips. Although bleeding may stop, abdominal distension occurs, rendering the patient unable to speak. If the person appears intoxicated, it is difficult to treat. However, if stasis blood (blood stagnation) is expelled immediately, the wound feels warm and hot, and the patient can open their mouth and speak, then it is treatable. Chao Yuan-fang discussed three types of poisoned arrows in his work *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases). The first type involves people in Lingnan using scorched copper for arrowheads. The second type, found north of the岭 (mountain range), uses juice from substances bitten by venomous snakes, which is placed in tubes to soak the arrowheads. The third type involves treating arrowheads with specific drugs. Injuries caused by these three methods are not easy to treat; only urgent consumption of fecal juice can counteract the toxicity. If treatment is delayed even slightly, the toxic qi will penetrate deeply, making rescue impossible.
To treat poisoned arrow injuries and detoxify: Lan Zi San Formula
Isatidis Radix (Banlangen, 5 he, used raw) Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried) Spermacoceae Herba (Wangbuliuxing) (each 4 liang)
The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Each dose consists of two qianbi (a small measuring spoon), taken with warm water, at any time. Administer three times daily. Additionally, mix a small amount of powder with water and apply it topically to the wound.
To treat arrowheads or poison remaining inside the body without being expelled: Ban Xia San Formula
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 3 liang, soaked for three days in juice extracted from 3 jin of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang]) Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian) (3 liang)
The above two ingredients are stir-fried together, ground into powder. Each dose is one qianbi, taken with wine, three times during the day and once at night, at any time. For superficial wounds, expulsion occurs within ten days; for deep wounds, within twenty days.
To treat arrowheads or poison lodged in various parts of the body without being expelled: Mudan Pi San Formula
Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, prepared as powder constituting two parts) Halitum (Baigan) (0.5 liang)
The above two ingredients are ground together uniformly into a powder. Each dose is two qianbi, taken with warm wine, three times daily. The arrowhead will gradually be expelled naturally.
To treat wounds from metal blades or arrowheads, avoid wind, regenerate tendons and bones, and stop bleeding: Duanshi Fufang (Calcined Iron Ore Poultice)
Fenghua Duanshi (Weathered Calcined Iron Ore, fine powder, 3 liang) Fresh leaves of Brassica campestris var. rapa (Sheng Dizhong Songmiao) Fresh flowers of Inulae Flos (Sheng Xuanfuhua) Fresh leaves of Puerariae Radix (Sheng Ge Ye) Fresh shoots of Artemisia annua (Sheng Qinghaomiao) Fresh shoots of Ophiopogonis Radix (Sheng Maidongmiao) (each 0.5 liang)
For the above six ingredients, excluding the calcined iron ore, crush and extract the juice. Mix with the calcined iron ore to form cakes, sun-dry, then crush and sift into a powder. Apply to the wound. This also stops bleeding and pain, protects against wind and cold. It is best prepared on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
To treat poisoned arrows: Beizi San Formula (to be ingested)
Concha Arcae (Beizi)
The above single ingredient is crushed, sifted, and made into powder. Each dose is one qianbi, taken with warm wine, at any time, three to four times daily. This formula is also excellent for treating poisoning.
To treat poisoned arrows: Gan Jiang San Formula
Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, powdered) Sal (Yan)

To treat injuries from poisoned arrows causing severe restlessness and near-death state: Mashu Zhi Fang (Hemp Seed Juice Drink)
Cannabis Fructus (Damaizi, 3 sheng)
The above single ingredient is crushed to extract natural juice. Each dose is approximately half a zhan (cup), administered twice daily.
To treat poisoned arrows: Xionghuang Fuchuang Fang (Realgar Wound Poultice)
Xionghuang (Realgar)
The above single ingredient is crushed and ground into fine powder. Apply to the wound four to five times daily. Healing occurs when exudate appears. This is also effective for snakebite wounds.
Another Formula
Extract natural juice from Phragmitis Rhizoma (Lugen). Each dose is approximately half a zhan, taken twice during the day and once at night. Another method suggests drinking Lotus Root Juice (Ou Zhi); the more, the better.
To treat poisoned arrows: Gancao Yin Fang (Licorice Decoction)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 3 liang)
The above single ingredient is finely chopped. Boil in two sheng of water until reduced to one sheng, then strain to obtain juice. Each dose is one small zhan, taken warm, three times daily. Also, pour the remaining liquid over the wound.
To treat poisoned arrows: Shengjiang Yin Fang (Fresh Ginger Decoction)
Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 0.5 jin, sliced)

To treat poisoned arrows: Xuanfu Gen San Formula (Inula Root Powder)
Inulae Radix (Xuanfu Gen, quantity as needed)
The above single ingredient is crushed, sifted, and made into powder. Each dose is two qianbi, taken with warm wine, three times daily, at any time. Also apply topically into the wound. If roots or flowers are unavailable, seeds may be used.
To treat poisoned arrows: Dilong San Formula
Excrement of Earthworms (Dilong Fen)
The above single ingredient is ground into powder. Take one qianbi mixed with boiled water, three times daily, at any time.
To treat drug-poisoned arrowheads lodged in various parts of the body without being expelled: Xionghuang San Formula
Xionghuang (Realgar, finely ground, 1 fen) Fen Shuang (Calomelas, ground, 0.5 liang) Scarabaeus (Qianglang, four pieces, ground, used raw) Semen Crotonis (Badou, three kernels, husked, ground separately into a paste, used raw)
The above four ingredients are ground together into a powder. Use the tip of a chopstick to take cow's milk, applying it frequently to the wound. After seven days, the wound will become hot, and the arrowhead will be expelled naturally.
