Commentary states: Injuries caused by bamboo or wood splinters, if superficial, may still remain lodged in the muscles for a long time. This will damage Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), leading to ulceration and suppuration. If exposed to wind-water pathogens, it results in swelling, pain, and pus formation. Lingering for years, such injuries are difficult to treat. At the initial stage of injury, the foreign body should be removed promptly, accompanied by topical application, to prevent complications from wind-water pathogens.
For treating metal wounds (Jinchuang, traumatic injuries caused by metal instruments), water toxicity, bamboo splinters, carbuncles, sores, and heat toxins, etc., the following prescriptions are used:
Glutinous Rice (Sanmi) (Take three sheng [approx. 1.8 liters] of glutinous rice, place it in a porcelain basin, soak in cold water starting forty-nine days before the Dragon Boat Festival. Change the water twice daily. Gently rinse and drain during changes without crushing the grains. Soak until the Dragon Boat Festival, then take out, dry in the sun, store in a raw silk bag, and hang in a ventilated place.)
Take a small amount of this single ingredient, stir-fry until charred, and grind into a powder. Mix with cold water to form a paste. Apply according to the size of the wound, securing it firmly. Remove when healed. If a metal wound is accidentally exposed to raw water, causing progressive suppuration, immediately wrap the wound with this paste. After some time, the swelling will subside, suppuration will cease, and the wound will heal. For early-stage carbuncles or toxic sores presenting with redness, swelling, and heat, apply this paste immediately to the nape and the swollen area. For bamboo or wood splinters embedded in flesh, apply before sleep. Remove the next day; the splinter will be extracted within the medicament. When applying to toxic swellings, replace when dry, keeping it moist is ideal. However, do not change the dressing for metal wounds or water toxicity, as this may disturb the wound site.
Rose Ash Powder (Qiangwei Hui San) for treating bamboo/wood splinters.
Rose (Qiangwei) (Five jin [approx. 3 kg])
Burn the single ingredient to ash, grind finely into a powder. Take one qianbi [approx. 5g] per dose, mixed with warm wine. Administer on an empty stomach, at midnight, noon, and before bed.
Chisel-and-Mortise Ash Powder (Zaorui Hui San) for treating embedded splinters.
Zaorui (Woodworking chisel/mortise remnants or specific root)
Burn the single ingredient to ash, grind finely into a powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mixed with warm wine.
Vaccaria Seed Powder (Wangbuliuxing San) for treating splinters lingering in flesh.
Vaccaria Seed (Wangbuliuxing) (Five liang [approx. 250g])
Pound and sieve the single ingredient into a powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mixed with warm wine. Administer on an empty stomach, at midnight, noon, and before bed.
Kudzu Flower Powder (Qumai San) for treating embedded splinters.
Kudzu Flower (Qumai) (Five liang [approx. 250g])
Pound and sieve the single ingredient into a powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mixed with warm wine. Administer on an empty stomach, at midnight, noon, and before bed.

Grind these two ingredients together into a paste and apply. Change once daily.
External Application for Embedded Splinters.
Sheep Feces (Yangfen)
Grind the single ingredient into a fine powder. Mix with lard (Zhuzhi) and apply. Apply three to five times daily. The splinter will naturally expel overnight.
Gardenia Sleeve Method (Zhizi Tao Fang) for splinters under the nail causing unbearable pain.
Gardenia Husk (Zhizi Qiao) (Half a husk, filled with axle grease/Chezhi)
Place the husk filled with grease over the finger. If the painful area becomes slightly itchy, the splinter will emerge naturally. Remove with tweezers. This method also applies to pinched fingers.
Arctium Leaf Powder (Niubangye San) for all injuries caused by metal, wood, or bamboo.
Arctium Leaf (Niubangye) (Also known as Eupatorium leaf, harvested in June-July)
Dry the single ingredient in the shade and grind into a powder. Apply a quantity appropriate to the wound size as a dry powder dressing. Do not mix with other medicines. If flies lay eggs in the wound during summer months, or if healing tissue forms small pores harboring maggots, grind Apricot Kernel (Xingren) into a paste, shape into strips by hand, and insert into the pores. The maggots will exit spontaneously.
Ivory Powder (Xiangya San) for broken needles embedded in flesh.
Ivory Chips (Xiangyaxie)
Mix the single ingredient with mouse brain and apply. The needle will be expelled immediately.
Soap Pod Ash Patch (Zaojia Hui Tie) for splinters causing suppuration.
