Discussion states: The ear is the external manifestation of the Kidney (Shen) and also a cavity where the Heart (Xin) resides. When wind-heat pathogens contend within the meridians, body fluids in the ear coagulate and accumulate, resembling bran flakes. Over time, these form hard nodules that do not dissipate, or resemble silkworm pupae, obstructing the qi passages. Cerumen (earwax) blockage leads to deafness.
For treating cerumen blocking the ear, use the Fan Shi Gao Formula (Alum Ointment):
Fan Shi (Calcined Alum, 3 fen until juice is dry), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root, peeled and umbilicus removed, 1 liang), Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome, 0.5 liang), Xing Ren (Bitter Apricot Seed, soaked in hot water, peeled, tip removed, twin kernels discarded, stir-fried until yellow, 3 liang, separately ground), Bi Ma Ren (Castor Bean Seed, 2.5 liang, separately ground), Song Zhi (Pine Resin), Yan Zhi (Soot from chimney, each 3 fen).
Crush and grind the above seven ingredients evenly, mix into an ointment. Wrap in cotton to the size of a jujube pit, insert into the ear, replace frequently, until healed.
For treating cerumen blocking the ear causing deafness, which is hard and cannot be picked out, use the Zhu Zhi Gao Formula (Pig Fat Ointment):
