Commentary states: The ear is the external orifice of the Heart (Xin, Heart) and is connected to the Kidney Qi (Kidney Qi). When the Zang-Fu organs are harmonious, the orifice remains patent without obstruction; however, if Kidney Qi is deficient and Wind pathogen invades, compounded by excessive worry and mental labor that causes Qi and vessels to knot internally without unblocking, turbid sounds will arise within the ear, striking against the Qi to produce tinnitus. The sound may resemble bells, chimes, thunder drums, or cicada chirps; all are caused by Kidney deficiency.
