[General Discussion on the Liver / Liver Deficiency]
Discussion states: The Liver and Gallbladder are interior-exteriorly related; thus, the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian form an interior-exterior pair. Its elemental nature is Wood, it prospers in Spring, its pulse is Wiry (Xian), it houses the Ethereal Soul (Hun), it nourishes the sinews, its orifice is the eyes, its vocalization is a shout, its odor is musky, its fluid is tears, and its taste is sour. When Liver Qi is excessive, there is surplus Blood. Consequently, one may experience red eyes, pain in both hypochondriac regions radiating to the lower abdomen, and irritability. In severe cases, rebellious Qi causes dizziness, deafness, and swollen cheeks; these are all manifestations of Liver Excess syndromes. When Liver Qi is deficient, there is insufficient Blood. Consequently, one may experience blurred vision, stiffness and spasms in the hypochondriac region and sinews, inability to take deep breaths, brittle nails, a bluish complexion, sadness, fear, and a sensation as if being pursued; these are all manifestations of Liver Deficiency syndromes. For excess syndromes, use draining methods; for deficiency syndromes, use tonifying methods. If the pulse is Tight (or Excessive), sweating is contraindicated; if the pulse is Weak, purgation is contraindicated. One must assess excess and deficiency, examine the normal pulse characteristics, and apply treatment accordingly; this is the general principle.
Discussion states: Symptoms of Liver Deficiency include a bluish complexion, fastidiousness about cleanliness, irritability, palpable Qi movement to the left of the umbilicus that feels firm and painful upon pressure, loss of appetite, depression and unhappiness, fear and trembling as if being pursued. If the pulse appears at the Guan position on the left hand indicating Yin deficiency, this confirms the diagnosis.
