Discussion states: When the Chong vessel (Penetrating Vessel) is diseased, it manifests as counterflow of Qi and abdominal tension with pain. Furthermore, the Chong vessel originates at Qichong (ST30), ascends alongside the umbilicus, and disperses in the chest. In individuals suffering from Xu Lao (Deficiency Emaciation), if Kidney Qi is insufficient and the Chong vessel is injured, the symptoms include internal abdominal cramping and urgency, pulling pain from above the umbilicus to the epigastrium, inability to eat, coldness of the body, and tremors.
For treating Xu Lao with abdominal tension and pain, pain in the lower abdomen, Qi pulling sensation in the chest and hypochondrium, or heart pain and shortness of breath, use Shaoyao Decoction.
Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (3 liang), Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei) (remove rhizome head), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) (prepared until cracked, 2 liang each), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (roasted and crushed), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (remove coarse bark, 1 liang each), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis).
The above six herbs are coarsely pounded and sifted. For each dose, take 3 qianbi (approx. 9-15g depending on era/measure), add one zhan (cup) of water, one fen of crushed fresh ginger, and two jujubes pitted. Decoct until reduced to seven-tenths. Strain the dregs, add one part Yi Tang (Malt Sugar), and boil again until boiling. Take warm on an empty stomach, and administer again at midnight and before sleep.
For treating Xu Lao with abdominal tension and various deficiencies, use Huangqi Jianzhong Decoction.
