Commentary states: The Heart governs blood and qi, and is internally-externally related to the Small Intestine (Hand-Taiyang) and Bladder (Foot-Taiyang), jointly regulating water passages. When heat accumulates in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), Qi mechanism fails to circulate freely, resulting in urinary retention and dribbling, forming Lin syndrome (strangury). If heat becomes severe and clashes with the blood vessels, blood, stimulated by heat, flows recklessly into the bladder region and is discharged together with urine; this condition is termed Blood Lin (hematuric strangury).
For treating Blood Lin with symptoms of hematuria, heat accumulation, and painful dysuria, use Lingyangjiao Yin Decoction:
Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus), Dongkuizi (Malvae Semen, stir-fried, each 1 liang), Qingxiangzi (Phytolaccae Fructus), Honglanhua (Carthami Flos, stir-fried), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed and dried), Daqingye (Isatidis Folium).
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi (approx. 9g), boiled in one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to 8/10 volume. Strain and take warm at any time.
