[Discussion] The Spleen and Stomach are the officials responsible for storing and transforming grain, distributing the Qi and moisture of all things to nourish the Zang-Fu organs. The Spleen belongs to Earth; Earth controls Water, thus preventing Water from overflowing. In individuals with deficiency and damage, the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is weak, so they cannot effectively digest food and fluids. The Qi of Earth fails to overcome dampness/water, causing body fluids to stagnate and accumulate, condensing in the upper diaphragm region, which forms Phlegm (Tan). Now, by tonifying deficiency and assisting the Spleen with appropriate herbs, the Phlegm will naturally dissipate.
