It is stated that Qi belongs to Yang, and Blood belongs to Yin. When Yin and Yang are in harmony, various diseases do not arise. If they become weak or deficient, diseases characterized by an excess of either Yin or Yang may occur. Therefore, individuals with deficiency and damage often suffer from insufficient Ying (Nutritive) Blood, leading to dried-up and scanty Jin-Ye (Body Fluids), which fail to adequately nourish the body. This results in emaciated and withered muscles, yellowed and brittle facial hair, cold hands and feet, and a pale complexion. The treatment for such deficiencies should incorporate formulas that tonify and benefit the Blood.
Lingsu Dan Formula: Treats ailments of the legs and waist, unblocks the Nine Orifices, promotes the free flow of San-Jiao (Triple Burner), and addresses Wu-Lao (Five Exhaustions) and Qi-Shang (Seven Injuries). It dispels wind-cold pathogens, harmonizes the Zang-Fu organs, and benefits the Blood while tonifying deficiency.
Ingredients: Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, 5 liang, soaked in wine overnight, separately pounded into powder); Rubi Fructus (Fupenzi, 3 liang, soaked in wine and baked); Arecae Semen (Binglang, roasted); Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, radix removed, soaked in wine, sliced, and baked); Cistanches Herba (Roucongrong, rough skin removed, soaked in wine, sliced, and baked); Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, soaked in wine, chopped, and baked); Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shugan Dihuang, soaked in wine for three days and baked; each 2 liang); Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum (Lurong, one pair, coated with butter and roasted); Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, coarse bark removed); Morus Radix Cortex (Bajitian, purple ones selected, heart removed); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, processed until cracked, skin and bud removed); Dryopteridis Rhizoma (Shihu, roots removed); Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingjuapi, white pith removed and baked); Broussonetiae Fructus (Chushi, stir-fried); Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Xiangzi, lightly stir-fried); Os Draconis (Bailonggu, crushed and ground); Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, coarse bark removed, sliced, and stir-fried); Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi, lightly stir-fried); Fenugreci Semen (Huluba); Pyrrhosae Folium (Shiwei, hairs removed); Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi); Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, heart removed); Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, stir-fried); Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang, chopped); Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, stir-fried); Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu); Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Bixie); Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyu, pounded into powder; each 1 liang).
The above twenty-eight ingredients are pounded and sifted into fine powder. Use the wine in which the herbs were soaked to mix with the Shanyu powder to form a paste. Add 1 liang of butter and 1 liang of honey, then pound the mixture three to five hundred times. Form pills the size of Sophora seeds (Wutongzi). Take 20-30 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salted water.
Dijin Wan Formula: Tonifies the blood vessels, darkens hair and beard, moistens the skin, and eliminates diseases caused by wind-cold.
Ingredients: Raw Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang, 17 jin, cut with a bamboo knife, pounded in a wooden mortar); Costi Radix (Muxiang); Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, soaked in wine for one day, steamed, separately pounded into powder); Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, soaked in wine overnight, sliced, and baked; each 2 liang); Fermented Rice (Chenqu, 1 jin, pounded into powder); Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Heshouwu, steamed with black soybeans for one shichen [two hours], sun-dried, pounded into powder in a wooden mortar); Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, skin and tip removed, double-kernel almonds discarded, ground, and pressed between paper to remove oil; each 4 liang).
Mix the above seven ingredients evenly and place them in a clay jar. Fill level, cover with a new lid secured tightly, seal with 1 liang of white salt mixed with ash mud to prevent air leakage. Dig a pit two chi deep and wide. Heat the pit slowly with low fire, then place the herb jar inside. Burn slowly with chaff fire for three days and nights. Open to check; if the liquid resembles the color of fermented soybean juice, stop heating. If it has turned to powder, burn for one more day. Ensure no women, chickens, or dogs touch the herbs during processing or opening. Grind the contents finely and add the following: Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum (Lurong, coated with butter and roasted); Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, baked); Cistanches Herba (Roucongrong, soaked in wine overnight, sliced, and baked); Poria (Fuling, black skin removed); Rubi Fructus (Fupenzi, baked); Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu); Morus Radix Cortex (Bajitian, heart removed; each 2.5 liang). Pound these together in a wooden mortar into powder.
Combine the fourteen ingredients and shape into cakes. Pound 1.5 jin of dried Dioscorea rhizome (Shanyu), coat the inside and outside of a basin with it. Place on a bamboo rack, cover with paper, and dry in the shade. Store in a new ceramic vessel. When needed, pound into fine powder using a wooden mortar and sieve. Mix with refined white honey, pound another thousand times, and form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine, followed by another dose after meals. After 100 days, take once daily. Wash the residue stuck to the jar with wine, store in a separate bottle, and consume one cup daily.
Baizhu Shihu Tang Formula: Tonifies deficiency and benefits blood, regulates Ying and Wei (Defensive) Qi, promotes appetite, treats pain in hands and feet, and alleviates limb fatigue.
Ingredients: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu); Dryopteridis Rhizoma (Shihu, roots removed, chopped, stir-fried with wine; each half liang); Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjiesui, 3 qian); Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, chopped and stir-fried); Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao, seedlings and soil removed; each 1 fen); Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi); Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, each 3 qian); Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, chopped and stir-fried); Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, sliced and baked).
The above nine ingredients are pounded and sifted into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qianbi (approx. 4-5 grams), add one zhan (unit of volume) of water, five slices of fresh ginger, and three jujubes. Decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, strain, and take warm before meals, three times daily.
Wulao Wan Formula: Treats insufficiency due to deficiency labor, decreased appetite, failure to build flesh, and dysfunction of the San-Jiao (Triple Burner).
