Commentary states: The character "Xuan" (Tinea/Ringworm) is derived from "Xian" (Fresh/Bright), indicating that the disease initially presents with mild symptoms and bright coloration. If left untreated, the condition will spread and proliferate like overflowing water. This disease arises from Wind-Dampness pathogens invading the Couli (skin texture and pores), where they contend with Qi and Blood, causing stagnation and obstruction in their circulation. Over time, due to the influence of Wind-Dampness, parasites are generated. Therefore, when Wind predominates over Dampness, it is called Dry Tinea (Gan Xuan). Its characteristics include a clear boundary around the lesion, dry and itchy skin, and the shedding of white scales upon scratching. When Dampness predominates over Wind, it is called Damp Tinea (Shi Xuan). Its characteristics include movement within the boundaries resembling insect crawling, exudative redness and moisture, and oozing fluid upon scratching. When Wind injures Qi and Blood, it is called Wind Tinea (Feng Xuan), characterized by local numbness and insensitivity to pain or itch. Lesions shaped like copper coins are called Round Tinea (Yuan Xuan), and those resembling sparrow-eye spots are called Sparrow-Eye Tinea (Que Mu Xuan); these also present with redness, swelling, pain, and itching. Additionally, drinking water contaminated by cattle or dogs, or using residual water from quenching blades for washing hands and bathing can introduce toxic vapors into the body, leading to tinea. Thus, tinea acquired from contact with cattle toxins resembles cowhide in appearance. Among all types of tinea, the most severe in terms of pathogenic toxicity is commonly known as Psoriasis (Niu Pi Xuan). Dog tinea presents with connected white spots; Knife tinea has irregular longitudinal and oblique shapes. These eight conditions are all caused by Wind-Dampness toxic vapors damaging the muscles and skin, resulting in persistent pain and itching, chronic non-healing, and are collectively referred to as Chronic Tinea (Jiu Xuan).
