[Diarrhea due to Dampness] Intestinal borborygmus without abdominal pain. Pure clear water is discharged. This is caused by dampness. Use Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with earth), Zhuling (Polyporus), Fuling (Poria, each 1.5 qian), Zexie (Alismae Rhizoma, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. This is Siling San (Four-Ingredient Powder for Promoting Urination); when urination increases, diarrhea stops spontaneously. If accompanied by damp-heat, use Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with earth until scorched, each 3 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take; effect is immediate. If accompanied by cold-dampness, add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian) to Siling San, decoct together and take.
[Cold-Damp Diarrhea] Cold hands and feet, no thirst, clear urine, discharge of cold and clear stool characterizes cold diarrhea. First, decoct old ginger and brown sugar into a thick liquid and take it. Subsequently, use Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Baibiandou (Phaseoli Semen Album, stir-fried), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Jiao Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Scorched, each 2 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with earth until scorched, 2-3 qian), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus). Decoct in water and take.
[Food Stagnation Diarrhea] Abdominal distension or pain occurs intermittently. Pain is severe during defecation, which alleviates after diarrhea. Pain recurs upon eating. Stool color is white. This indicates food stagnation diarrhea. Use Zhizhu Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill): Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with flour), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, wine-stir-fried, each 2 liang), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried with flour, 1 liang), Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang). Cook old yellow rice in fresh lotus leaf soup to form pills.
[Heat Diarrhea] Abdominal pain with watery diarrhea feeling like hot soup. Thirsty with preference for cold drinks. Or discharge of yellow turbid matter, or red feces resembling porridge. All indicate heat syndrome. Use Yiyuan San (Benefit the Origin Powder, formula seen in Summerheat Syndrome section) 3 qian. Mix with Dengxincao Tang (Junci Medulla Decoction) and take two or three times; recovery is swift. Alternatively, take Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismae Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, each 2 qian), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, each 3 qian), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take warm shortly after meals. For heat diarrhea resembling dysentery, use Kuanlianshu Gen (Meliae Cortex Radicis, remove coarse bark, dry and powder). Form pills with rice drink and take with rice broth; highly effective.
[Severe Abdominal Pain from Middle-Jiao Cold Diarrhea] Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice, 1 liang), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, baked in flour), Caodoukou (Cardamomi Fructus, baked, each 5 qian). All powdered. Take 2-3 qian per dose, mixed with decocted ginger water.
[Watery Diarrhea] Occurs at the beginning of summer and autumn, regardless of cold, heat, or dampness. Abdominal pain with watery diarrhea. Use Zijin Ding (Purple Gold锭, authentic medicine acts quickly). Grind with cold boiling water and take 0.5-0.7 fen. Severe cases: take twice. (Avoid sweet foods.) In winter with heavy cold, use Qiai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach. For critically ill patients of any age with watery diarrhea, use Hezi (Terminaliae Fructus, one fruit wrapped in wet grass paper, baked ripe, pit removed) and Rouguo (Myristicae Semen, one fruit wrapped in dry dough moistened with water, baked slowly until black). Grind finely. Take 5 fen per dose, mixed with rice drink.
[Pingwei San] Treats spleen and stomach disharmony, abdominal pain and fullness, vomiting and hiccups, watery diarrhea. Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, pith removed, each 5 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, bran removed, soaked in rice wash water and stir-fried, 8 liang), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 3 liang). All powdered. Take 2-3 qian per dose, taken with ginger water. If urination is difficult, add Fuling (Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), etc.
[Chronic Diarrhea Becoming Dysentery] Regardless of red or white dysentery, with abdominal distension and attacking pain. Chuanhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 qian), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Muxiang (Vladimiriae Radix, each 1 qian). All ground finely, taken with rice drink.
[Deficiency Diarrhea] Food enters the stomach but digestion does not stop; undigested food is passed. Or fatigue and spontaneous sweating. This is Qi deficiency. Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-roasted thoroughly), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with earth until scorched), Fuling (Poria), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried and ground, each 2-3 qian), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 qian), Muxiang (Vladimiriae Radix), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, each 5 fen). Add three slices of baked ginger. Decoct in water and take shortly after meals.
[Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold Diarrhea] Old aged rice (washed clean, stir-fried until fragrant and dry), ground into powder. For every 1 liang of powder, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried dry and ground, 0.25 fen), white sugar 2 qian. Mix well. Take 1-2 liang mixed with boiling water when hungry. For Qi stagnation, add stir-fried Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) powder 0.2 fen, or Sharen (Amomi Fructus) powder 0.1 fen. Can treat food stagnation and Qi stagnation, chronic abdominal pain and diarrhea unresponsive to other treatments. Frequent self-administration yields results.
[Long-term Diarrhea with Loss of Appetite] Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa, 1 sheng, soak in water overnight, drain, slow-fire roast until cooked), grind into powder. Add Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) powder 1 liang, a little Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper) powder. Mix evenly. Add 2-3 spoons of white sugar. Take mixed with boiling water on an empty stomach. Make a hole, insert Baijian (Alumen, 3 fen). Wrap in wet paper. Bake in ash fire. Adults eat three, children eat one; effect is immediate.
[Kidney Deficiency Spleen Diarrhea] Diarrhea 3-5 times daily, stool loose like duck feces. Or diarrhea once or twice at dawn (fifth watch). This is Spleen Diarrhea. Different from ordinary diarrhea, hardest to treat. Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, salt-water stir-fried, 5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried scorched, 2 qian), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, salt-water stir-fried, 2 qian), Zexie (Alismae Rhizoma, 1 qian). Decoct in water, take on empty stomach for 30 doses, then heals spontaneously. Fresh Daogen (Radicis Oryzae, any amount, wash off mud). Boil into paste. Morning and evening, mix with boiling water, add 1 qian white sugar, stir well and take.

Or Qihai (CV6, 1.5 cun below umbilicus). Moxibustion through garlic slice for 14 moxa cones (two sevens), until effective.
Plague (Benevolent gentlemen, if you encounter this disease, either prepare medicine to help or write prescriptions to save lives. The merit is boundless. Attached: Emergency Food Relief Prescriptions)
[General Discussion] Diseases with similar symptoms among many people are called Tianxing Shi Yi (Seasonal Epidemic). Treatment methods vary: some require tonification, some dispersion, some purgation. Severe cases resemble Shaoyang/Taiyang disorders. Observe the transmission and progression; treatment can be effective. Initially, there is aversion to cold followed by fever. Later, only fever remains without aversion to cold. Pulse is rapid. Fever persists day and night, worsening in the late afternoon. Headache and body ache. This is seasonal pathogen lying hidden before the spine and behind the intestines/stomach. Do not mistake it for Taiyang exterior syndrome and forcibly induce sweating with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) or Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). This vainly damages exterior Qi. Even if fever persists, gentle purgation should be considered cautiously to avoid damaging Stomach Qi. Use Dayuan Yin (Reach the Original Drink): Binglang (Arecae Semen, 2 qian), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each 1 qian), Caoguoren (Tsaoko Fructus Seed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 5 fen). Decoct in water, take warm before noon. If hypochondriac pain, deafness, alternating chills and fever, vomiting, and bitter taste occur, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian). If lower back, upper back, or neck pain occurs, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian). If eye pain, brow bone/orbital pain, dry nose, insomnia occur, add Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 1 qian). Adjust dosage based on severity. If tongue has thin white coating, heat is mild, pulse is not rapid, disease will not transmit inward. Take 1-2 doses according to prescription; disease resolves. Generally, epidemic pathogens enter via mouth and nose, first attacking the Stomach. Upper jiao obstruction and fullness are common. This formula uses three Qi-breaking herbs; effect is immediate. For elderly or weak individuals without chest/diaphragm fullness, do not use full doses of Binglang, Houpo, and Caoguo. After 3-4 days, if tongue coating resembles accumulated powder, pulse is surging and rapid, sweat or purge methods may be needed. Shaoyang/Taiyang disorders resolve via sweating early; seasonal epidemics resolve via sweating later. Shaoyang/Taiyang disorders induce sweating immediately upon medication; seasonal epidemics wait for internal recovery, sweating occurs naturally. Therefore, plague does not require heavy clothing/bedding to force sweating. For four-season headache and fever initially, use 1 cup black sugar, 2 cups ginger juice. Dissolve and let patient drink as tolerated. Mild cases heal immediately; severe cases reduce dosage.
[Seasonal Epidemic Non-Contagious] Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3.33 qian, soak overnight in rice wash water, slice, stir-fry), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.66 qian), Fuxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 8.5 qian), Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 1.36 qian). Add 3 slices of ginger, 3 scallions with roots. Decoct in water, take on empty stomach. Those already sick: one dose heals. Those not yet sick: take half dose to prevent infection. White japonica rice 5 he, 20 scallions with roots, 20 bowls of water. Boil into porridge soup. Add 1 small bowl rice vinegar. Boil again. Give one bowl each. Take hot; slight sweating resolves disease. Do not take if already sweating. Clothes of newly infected persons should be steamed; family remains uninfected.
[Epidemic Avoidance Method] When entering a sick person's home, do not go on an empty stomach. Drink one cup of Xionghuangjiu (Realgar Wine). Then mix Xionghuang (Realgar) powder and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) powder with sesame oil, apply to nostrils to avoid infection. Upon exiting, burn paper and wave near nose; sneezing is beneficial. If sweat vapor enters nose causing headache/discomfort, mix Mustard seed (Jiecaizi) powder with water, fill navel. Apply hot object through one layer of clothing to warm. Sweating resolves condition. If chest feels full/distended, induce vomiting with light salt water to resolve.
[Preventive Epidemic Avoidance] Cut Qing Song Mao (Pinus massoniana needles) finely into powder. Take 2 qian with wine. Regular use greatly prevents epidemic. Every April-May, place one Guan Zhong (Cyrtomii Rhizoma) in drinking water jar to prevent seasonal diseases. On Dragon Boat Festival (May 5th), make a human figure from Mugwort (Ai Ye), hang on door to ward off evil qi. Tie five-color silk on arm to avoid plague. On New Year's Day, throw 21 Chi Xiaodou (Adzuki Beans) into well to avoid plague. On December 25th, cook Adzuki bean porridge for whole family to consume; removes epidemic. On New Year's Eve, throw 21 Sichuan peppercorns and 21 Adzuki beans into well (do not let others see). No epidemic for one year. In epidemic years, throw a handful of Hei Dadou (Black Soybeans) into water jar every morning; family safe. At dawn (third watch), throw 2-3 he of Black Soybeans into well (do not let others see). All drinking water sources remain uncontaminated. Burn Jiangxiang (Dalbergia odorifera) frequently daily, carry随身携带 for epidemic prevention. In epidemic years, abstaining from sexual activity initially ensures easier recovery even if infected.
[Plague-induced Mania] Seasonal epidemic heat extreme, delirious speech, unrecognized persons. Immediately drink 1-2 bowls of Dijiangshui (Earth Slurry Water) to resolve. (Formula seen in Shaoyang/Taiyang Disorder section.) Alternatively, soak Tongbian (Child's Urine) with Baijing Qiuyin (White-leech Earthworm), pound to paste. Filter clear juice with fresh well water. Drink 1-2 bowls freely; refreshes and heals. If extreme heat without sweat, soak new blue cloth in cold water, wring slightly, place on patient's chest. Press with hand. Replace cloth when hot. Shortly, sweat pours like rain, or battle-sweat occurs resolving disease. (Use this method in summer only, not other seasons.)
After 8-9 days, after sweating/purging, heat remains unreduced. Thirst, dry throat, desire to drink water. Use Liuyi Ni (Six-One Mud, i.e., Earthworm excrement, any amount). Grind with fresh well water and drink; effective.
[Sanbai Yin] Treats seasonal epidemic, extreme heat mania, persistent fever, or dry constipation. One egg white, one large spoonful white honey, Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 qian). Mix together, take with spring water; heals immediately.
[Plague-induced Macules] Critical illness. Take 1-2 large toads. Remove guts. Pound raw, squeeze juice. Take orally to resolve.
[Toad Plague] Symptoms: swollen neck, enlarged head. Use Guan Zhong (Cyrtomii Rhizoma), Heidou (Soybean, roasted fragrant, each 3 qian), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, each 1.5 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take. Externally, mix Jingdi Ni (Well Bottom Mud) with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) to apply swelling. Dahuang (4 liang), Jiangcan (Silkworm, 3 liang), Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, 2.5 qian), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, 6.5 qian). All powdered. Paste with ginger juice into pills, each weighing 1 qian. Take with honey water. (Adults: 1 pill; Children: half pill.) Externally, apply Dianqing (Indigo Naturalis) to swelling. Re-moisten if dry; also effective.
[Biwen Dan] Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 jin), Jiangxiang (Dalbergia odorifera, chopped powder, 8 liang), Xionghuang (Realgar), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Chi Xiaodou (Adzuki Bean, each 2 liang), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Changpu Root (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Taotou (Peach Tip, collected on Dragon Boat Festival best, each 4 liang), Baiye (Cupressi Cacumen, 8 liang), Huang (Sulfur), Huoxiao (Saltpeter, each 1 liang). All powdered. Paste with red date pulp into round tablets. Burn to repel epidemic. Especially burn more on Dragon Boat Festival and New Year's Eve.
[Xu Zhenjun Emergency Food Relief Prescription] Huangdou (Soybean, 7 dou), Zhima (Sesame, 3 dou). Wash clean with water, steam immediately. Do not soak too long, lest vital energy be lost. Steam then dry. Dry, remove shells. Steam and dry again. Repeat three times total. Pound thoroughly. Form pills walnut-sized. Take one pill per dose; sustains hunger for three days. Cost is low; one batch saves ten thousand people. Benevolent gentlemen storing grain for righteous fields benefit future generations, the greatest benevolence. In famine years, relieve according to ability, buy high sell low to save region. Saving thousands registers name in Immortal Record. Benevolent people practicing charity receive heavenly rewards without end.
[Emergency Food Relief Prescription] Zhima (Sesame, 3 sheng), Nuomi (Glutinous Rice, 3 sheng). Wash and dry, stir-fry over low fire. First grind Nuomi into powder. Mix with Zhima. Grind again separately. Use Hongzao (Red Date, 3 jin), boil until soft, keep only 1 bowl of juice, remove skin and pits. Pound together with powder in stone mortar until cooked. Form pills marble-sized.
