Commentary states: Stye (Hordeolum) occurs when pathogenic heat combats with blood vessels, attacking upward to the eyes. It manifests on the eyelids as swollen and painful nodules, with redness at the base and a white head containing pus. The pain is like needle pricking. The treatment principle requires a detailed examination of external symptoms; appropriate scarification should be performed to drain pathogenic toxins. Subsequently, decoctions that reduce swelling and clear heat should be administered to eradicate the root cause.
For treating heat pathogens lodging in the eyes, forming swollen nodules, commonly known as "Stealing Needle" (Tou Zhen), use Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction).
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum, washed seven times with water to remove slipperiness), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, removing seedlings and leaves, 1 liang each), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, removing rhizome heads), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, removing pulp and bran-fried, 2 liang each), Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Carpus, 0.5 liang).
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Take 5 qianbi per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water, include ginger slice (size of a jujube, smashed), and decoct until reduced to 6/10. Strain and take warm after meals and before bedtime.
