Discussion: The condition of hoarseness caused by wind-cold refers to a hoarse and unsmooth voice. This is because the Lung corresponds to Metal in the Five Elements, and Metal governs sound production. The five Zang organs correspond to five sounds, all of which are derived from Lung Qi and connected through it. Now, when wind-cold pathogenic factors invade the Lung Meridian, the airway becomes disordered, resulting in the inability to produce sound or hoarseness.
Treatment for loss of voice due to wind-cold, where speech cannot be produced, use Xingren Decoction (Almond Decoction):
Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double kernels ground into paste) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (coarse bark removed, two liang each) Ziwan (Aster Root) (roots and soil removed) Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) (stir-fried) Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb) (core removed, stir-fried with bran)
The above six herbs, except for Xingren, are crushed and sifted into fine powder. Add one sheng of water, one he of fresh ginger juice, two liang of Yitang (Maltose), and two he of honey. Add Xingren and simmer over low heat until it forms a thick syrup. Take one spoonful at any time, mixed with warm wine.
Treatment for wind-cold lodging in the Lung, causing obstructed airways and inability to speak, use Runfei Decoction (Lung-Moistening Decoction):
Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) (roots and joints removed) Renshen (Ginseng Root) (two liang each) Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double kernels dried and stir-fried with bran until yellow) Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb) (core removed, stir-fried with bran until yellow, two and a half liang each) Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried and cut, one liang) Chenpi (Dried Tangerine Peel) (soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, one fen) Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) (radicle removed, stir-fried) Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) (heated until dry, half liang each)
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Take three qianbi per dose, add one and a half sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
Treatment for wind-cold clumping in the Lung, causing qi blockage and inability to speak due to hoarseness, use Zhongru Decoction (Stalactite Decoction):
Zhongru Fen (Calcium Carbonate Powder) Baishiying (Quartz) (ground) Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) (roots and joints removed) Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) (stir-fried) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (coarse bark removed) Chifuling (Red Poria) (black skin removed) Zisuzi (Perilla Seed) Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double kernels stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow) Renshen (Ginseng Root) (one liang each) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (core removed, dried) Kudonghua (Winter Flower) (half liang each)
The above eleven herbs: first, crush the first ten herbs into coarse pieces, then add Zhongru Fen and grind evenly. Take three qianbi per dose, add one sheng of water, half a piece of sliced fresh ginger, and three cracked dates. Boil together until reduced to seventy percent, remove dregs, and take slightly warm at any time.
Treatment for wind-cold injuring the Lung, causing hoarseness and inability to speak, use Shichangpu San (Calamus Powder):
Shichangpu (Calamus Rhizome) (cut on stone, preferably from rocky habitats) Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) (stir-fried) Chenpi (Dried Tangerine Peel) (soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried) Xixin (Asarum Root) (herbs removed) Ziwan (Aster Root) (roots and soil removed) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (roasted until cracked, amount unspecified in text)
The above eight herbs are made into a fine powder. Mix with warm wine and take one qianbi, after meals.
Treatment for Lung deficiency and wind-cold causing hoarseness and inability to speak, use Tongyin San (Voice-Unblocking Powder):
Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (forks removed) Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root) (radicle removed) Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) Qinjiao (Sichuan Pepper) (remove eyes and closed-mouth ones, stir-fry until oil sweats out) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (roasted until cracked) Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (finely cut, one liang and three fen each) Tianxiong (Aconitum Lateral Root Preparatum) (roasted until cracked, skin and navel removed) Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) (roots and joints removed) Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) (stir-fried) Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit) (washed in hot water, dried and stir-fried) Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried and cut, one liang and half a liang each) Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root) (roots and soil removed) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (coarse bark removed, honey-fried) Shanyu (Dioscorea Rhizome) Duzhong (Eucommia Bark) (coarse bark removed) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Xixin (Asarum Root) (herbs removed) Fangji (Stephania Tetrandra Root) (one liang and one fen each) Ziwan (Aster Root) (roots and soil removed) Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemum Flower) (selected) Guanzhong (Cyrtomium Rhizome) (one liang each) Fuzi (Aconitum Lateral Root Preparatum) (roasted until cracked, skin and navel removed, one liang and one fen)
The above twenty-two herbs are made into a fine powder. Take a fangcunbi (square-inch measure) with wine, twice daily. (Another prescription includes one and a half liang of Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum] and one liang and one fen of Danggui [Angelica Sinensis Root]).
Treatment for Lung deficiency injured by wind-cold, causing hoarse voice, rapid breathing, upward rushing qi, and cough, use Tongsheng Xingan Decoction (Voice-Resolving Acrid-Sweet Decoction):
Su (Butter/Ghee) (authentic) Mi (Honey) Yitang (Maltose) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (natural juice extracted) Baibu (Stemona Root) (natural juice extracted) Zao (Jujube) (steamed, skin and pits removed, ground) Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed...)
The above eight herbs are mixed and simmered over low heat, stirring constantly. After about the time it takes to cook a meal, reduce the liquid by half. Take one spoonful mixed with wine each time, swallowing slowly. Twice daily, once at night.
Treatment for Lung affected by wind pathogen, causing stagnant and obstructed airways and hoarse voice, use Jiangsui Decoction (Ginger Marrow Decoction):
Shengjiangzhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) (six he) Niuxie (Ox Marrow) You (Oil) (refined separately, three he each) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (coarse bark removed, one liang) Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root) (radicle removed) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (forks removed, three...)
The above eight herbs: crush five herbs into powder, mix evenly with ginger juice, oil, and marrow. Simmer over low heat for five to seven boils, then add one sheng and two he of wine and simmer into a syrup. Take one spoonful each time, holding in the mouth to dissolve. Three to five times daily.
Treatment for cold affecting the interior causing hoarseness, stopping wheezing and cough, warming Lung Qi, use Wenfei Decoction (Lung-Warming Decoction):
Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double kernels stir-fried until yellow) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (coarse bark removed) Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) (roots and joints removed, half liang each) Nuomi (Glutinous Rice) (three he) Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried and cut, one fen)
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Divide into five doses. For each dose, add three sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, filter out dregs, mix with one egg white, and take warm.
