Commentary: The condition of Wind Gan (Wind-type periodontal disease) presents with symptoms such as vacuity and swelling of the alveolar ridge and gums, loosening of teeth, erosion of tooth roots, putrefaction with foul odor and subsequent tooth loss. It may also attack downward causing ulceration of the gums and cheeks, with discharge of pus and blood. This is characteristic of Wind Gan. This pathology arises primarily from the deficiency of Qi in the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Wind pathogenic factors and heat toxins accumulate in the Stomach over a long period, steaming upward to the chest region, and attacking the mouth and teeth, thereby giving rise to this disease.
