Commentary states: When essence (Jing) is abundant, the spirit (Shen) is vigorous; when essence is depleted, the spirit declines. Depletion of spirit and essence leads to weakness of blood and qi, making the body susceptible to pathogenic factors. Therefore, accidental encounter with "ghostly" or malevolent pathogens results in a condition known as "Gui Ji" (Ghost Strike). This disease arises abruptly without gradual onset, striking the person suddenly as if injured by spears or halberds. It causes distension, fullness, and urgent pain in the chest, hypochondrium, and abdomen, which cannot be pressed or suppressed. Patients may immediately vomit blood, suffer from epistaxis (nosebleed), or have hematochezia (blood in stool). Mild cases may recover, while severe cases may prove fatal. Treatment should preferably employ talismanic and apotropaic methods, combined with herbal preparations that dispel evil and stabilize righteous qi.
Formula for Shi San (Stone Powder) to treat Gui Qi (Ghost Qi) striking the heart and abdomen with stabbing pain, vomiting and defecating blood, unconsciousness, sleep terrors (Yan), and biting heels without awareness:
Te Sheng Shi (Prepared Stone) 1 liang, Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus, peeled, seeded, and roasted) 1 liang, Xiong Huang (Realgar) ground into powder 1 liang, Li Lu (Veratri Rhizoma, rhizome removed and slightly roasted) 1 liang.
The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Using a bamboo tube, blow a quantity equivalent to a soybean into the nostril. Induction of sneezing facilitates the flow of qi; once qi flows freely, life is preserved. If sneezing does not occur, repeat the insufflation.
Alternative prescription: Add Dan Sha (Cinnabar) and She Xiang (Moschus) each 0.5 liang.
Formula for Sheng Ma San (Cimicifugae Rhizoma Powder) to treat sudden Gui Ji resembling knife stabs, with urgent pain in the chest, hypochondrium, and abdomen unyielding to pressure, accompanied by immediate hematemesis, epistaxis, or hematochezia:
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 0.5 liang, Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, rhizome removed) 0.5 liang, Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, outer bark removed) 0.5 liang.
The above three ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take one qian bi (approx. 3-5g) per dose, mixed with warm wine.
Alternative prescription: Remove Gui, add Xi Jiao Xie (Rhinocerotis Cornu Cutis, processed) 0.5 liang.
Another alternative prescription: Remove Du Huo, add Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 0.5 liang.
Formula to treat Gui Pai Ji (Ghost Striking):
Shu Ai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, prepared) equivalent to three chicken eggs.
Take this single ingredient, decoct in five zhan (approx. 1 liter) of water until reduced to two zhan. Strain and take the decoction in one dose.
Another formula:
Insufflate strong wine into the nasal cavity.
Another formula:
Mix one liang of Yan (Sal) with two zhan of water, stir and drink. Simultaneously spray the body with cold water. Vomiting shortly thereafter indicates recovery.
Formula for Xiong Huang San (Realgar Powder) to treat sudden Gui Ji, injuries from weapons where blood leaks into the abdomen but cannot exit, causing extreme irritability, fullness, and near-death sensation:
Xiong Huang (Realgar) 1 liang.
Grind this single ingredient into a powder. Take one qian bi mixed with warm wine, three times daily. The goal is to transform the congealed blood into fluid for expulsion.
Formula to treat sudden Gui Ji resembling an arrow wound, characterized by sudden, intense, piercing pain that is unbearable:
Take one piece of Tao Pi (Pruni Persicae Cortex), place the moist inner side against the painful area. Place a spoonful head on the peach bark. Vigorously rub it. Form a tuft of Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) the size of a walnut. Place the moxa on the spoon head and apply moxibustion. Pain will subside shortly.
Formula to treat sudden Gui Ji:
Ji Guan Xue (Galli Cristallius Sanguis).
Instill this single ingredient into the mouth and swallow. Then, slaughter the chicken and apply the carcass/warmth to the epigastrium. Discard the remains by the roadside upon cooling. Black chickens are preferred.
Another formula:
Zhi Zhi (Suet Porcinum).
Take a quantity equivalent to one chicken egg orally. If symptoms persist, administer another dose.
Another formula:
Ji Shi Bai (Excrementum Galli Album, slightly roasted) 1 liang, Qing Hua Ma (likely Cannabis Seed or similar herb, contextually interpreted as a purgative/diaphoretic agent here, often identified as Qian Niu Zi or similar in folk contexts, but literally "Blue Flower Hemp") one handful.
Decoct these two ingredients in three sheng of wine until reduced to one sheng. Strain and take hot. Sweating should occur shortly. If sweating does not occur, apply fire moxibustion to both sides of the hypochondrium to induce heat and sweating, which leads to cure.
