It is stated that there are indeed five types of Dan disease (jaundice). The first is called Huangdan (Yellow Jaundice), the second Huanghan (Yellow Sweat), the third Gu dan (Grain Jaundice), the fourth Jiu dan (Wine Jaundice), and the fifth Nü lao dan (Female Labor Jaundice). As for Huangdan, the entire body and face turn yellow like an orange peel. As for Huanghan, the body swells severely, sweat is yellow like the juice of Phellodendron bark (Huangbai), there is no thirst, and the condition resembles Fengshui (a type of edema disease). As for Gu dan, dizziness occurs after eating, the heart feels oppressed and uneasy leading to yellowing. As for Jiu dan, there is mental restlessness and pain in the heart, swelling and fullness in the feet, yellow urine, and red patches mixed with yellow-black on the face; this is caused by excessive drunkenness followed by exposure to wind or entering water. As for Nü lao dan, both the body and eyes turn yellow, accompanied by fever and aversion to cold, distension and urgency in the lower abdomen, and difficult urination; this is caused by excessive labor and heat, followed by overindulgence in sexual activity. Although these five types of Dan present different symptoms, they generally result from excessive intake of alcohol and food, where water and grain qi accumulate in the Spleen and Stomach, combined with pathogenic Wind-Dampness, causing Heat to stagnate and steaming, thus resulting in yellowing. Symptoms include feeling hungry immediately after eating, known as Wei dan (Stomach Jaundice); a black forehead and hot soles, known as Hei dan (Black Jaundice). Those who develop jaundice after Taiyang Cold Damage (Shanghan) or epidemic febrile diseases do so because Yangming disease presents with no sweat and difficult urination, causing Heat to stagnate internally, leading to mental restlessness and inevitable yellowing of the body. If treated with fire therapy, slight sweating on the forehead but continued difficulty in urination will also cause yellowing, resembling the color of an orange, with slight abdominal fullness; this is due to un-dispersed Cold-Dampness and stagnant Heat in the Spleen and Stomach. Furthermore, there are classifications of Nine Dan and Thirty-Six Huangs, each with distinct symptoms and names, all having specific treatments detailed in subsequent chapters. Generally, for Huang disease, promoting diuresis is indicated. Jaundice with thirst is difficult to treat, while jaundice without thirst is easier to treat.
The *Neijing* states that yellow eyes indicate Huangdan. It also states that quiet lying with a surging pulse indicates Huangdan. External signs include yellowing of the body, face, fingernails, and urine; internal signs include feeling hungry after eating. This is caused by excessive alcohol and food intake, generating Heat in the Spleen and Stomach, compounded by Wind-Dampness stagnation, preventing the dispersion of stagnant Heat which steams and causes the disease. If the complexion is slightly yellow, or the body shows blue, red, or black hues, it differs from pure Heat patterns and should be treated considering Wetness disorders (Shi jia). When Huangdan manifests in Yin regions, vomiting is likely; when it manifests in Yang regions, chills and slight fever occur. Jaundice without thirst is curable, while jaundice with thirst is difficult to cure.
