[Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma)]
Taste: bitter, sweet. Nature: warm. Non-toxic. It primarily treats wind-cold-damp bi syndrome (pain and numbness of limbs due to invasion of wind, cold, and damp pathogens), dead muscle (necrosis or insensitivity of muscles), spasmodic jaundice, stops sweating, clears heat, and aids digestion. It treats severe wind affecting the body and face (such as leprosy or severe wind pathogen invasion), wind-induced headache, tearing eyes, resolves phlegm-fluid retention, expels wind-water accumulation and swelling in the skin, relieves urgent fullness below the heart, and stops continuous vomiting and diarrhea in cholera-like disorders. It promotes blood circulation in the waist and umbilical region, benefits fluids, warms the stomach, promotes grain digestion, and increases appetite. *Yao Xing Lun* states: It is the Sovereign herb. Contraindications: peach, plum, sparrow meat, Chinese cabbage, and blue fish.
[Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen)]
Taste: sweet, pungent. Nature: neutral. Non-toxic. It treats chronic qi-type dysentery, abdominal distension and pain, breaks down and eliminates retained food, opens the stomach, and treats edema with fullness. Ri Huazi states: It treats five labors and seven injuries (general terms for various deficiency and exhaustion syndromes) and cold qi. It tonifies the waist and knees, strengthens weak sinews and bones, treats pi masses (abdominal lumps), cold zhama (cold-related abdominal masses) in women, warm febrile diseases, and miasma from mountainous regions. It relieves vexation, promotes muscle growth, and treats internal and external eye obstructions (cataracts). Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix) act as its guides. *Xian Jing* states: It can also eliminate evil qi and avert disasters. It is found everywhere, but those from Maoshan are of the best quality.
[Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix)]
Taste: pungent, bitter. Nature: neutral. Non-toxic. It primarily repairs severe injuries, tonifies deficiencies, boosts qi and strength, promotes robustness, removes facial blemishes/scars with its juice, nourishes muscles, strengthens yin, benefits bones, treats cold in the penis, spontaneous emission of essence (nocturnal emission), dribbling after urination, bitter taste in the mouth with dryness and thirst, and accumulation of cold blood stasis. *Yao Xing Lun* states: It is the Sovereign herb. It treats male deficiency-cold, replenishes essence and marrow, alleviates lower back and knee coldness/pain, and treats xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome) with middle-heat. Ri Huazi states: It tonifies five labors and seven injuries, treats nocturnal emission attributed to "ghostly intercourse," and moistens the lungs and heart. It works well when prepared with wine. Shuyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) and Songzhi (Pinii Resina) act as its assistants. Adverse interaction: Jun (likely referring to a specific fungus or herb, kept as per text). Both *Xian Jing* and folk prescriptions regard it as a tonic. It should be dried in the sun in September.
[Continuation for Niu Xi]
It is a Minister herb. Taste: bitter, sour. Nature: neutral. Non-toxic. It treats wind-cold-damp wei-bi syndrome (flaccidity and bi-pain due to cold-damp), limb contracture and flaccidity, and knee pain with inability to flex or extend. It expels blood and qi, [text implies potential harm in heat/fire conditions leading to abortion], treats deficiency of qi following injury, male genital atrophy, and urinary incontinence in the elderly. It tonifies the center, repairs severances, fills the bone marrow, relieves pain in the brain as well as lower back and spine, treats urinary obstruction and blood stasis in women, benefits essence, and promotes yin qi. *Yao Xing Lun* states: It is a Minister herb. Contraindication: beef. It treats impotence, tonifies the kidneys, fills essence, resolves bad blood stasis, assists the twelve meridians, and should be added for patients who are deficient and emaciated. Ri Huazi states: It breaks mass formations, drains pus, relieves pain, treats postpartum epigastric and abdominal pain, and expels dead fetuses; it strengthens yang. Adverse interactions: Yinghuo (Firefly), Luying (Euphorbia humifusa), Guijia (Testudo Carapax et Plastrum). Aversion: Baiqian (Polygalae Radix). Only those from Huaizhou are authentic.
