After hemostasis, this medicine is used for tonification.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) (2 liang, remove the rhizome head)
For each dose, use two cups of water and five dates. Decoct until one cup remains, and sip slowly. After taking the medicine, sleep soundly; thereafter, take other medicines to eradicate the root cause.
Its efficacy establishes it among the Three Powers (Heaven, Earth, Human), earning its renowned name; when Yin and Yang or blood collapse, it can restore life. With two liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) and five dates, one will know after ingestion that Qi and strength are magnificent.
Pan’s Commentary: In contemporary practice, those who use Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) either try it in small amounts tentatively or add other herbs to restrain its action. Its authority is not heavy, and its force is not concentrated. How can people rely on it for survival?
Ancients mostly used it after profuse sweating or severe purgation, as well as in conditions such as hematemesis (vomiting blood), metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), and syncope due to blood loss. It was contraindicated only in cases of cough.
Following any hemorrhage, there is inevitably a weakness of Essence and Qi, and a scattering of mental thoughts. Although the preceding formula has the effect of stopping bleeding, it lacks the power of tonification. Thus, the tangible Yin...
Self-annotation: It is advisable to sleep soundly, so that Spirit is calm and Qi is harmonious; then irritability will disappear and tranquility will return naturally. Generally, human Spirit arises from stillness and recovers through stillness.
Why do modern physicians, upon encountering patients with hematemesis, regard Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) as poison!
Chen Xiuyuan’s Commentary: The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states: "Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) has a sweet, slightly cold taste and is non-toxic. It primarily tonifies the Five Zang organs, calms the Spirit, stabilizes the Hun and Po, and stops palpitations."
Since the Five Zang organs belong to Yin, an unsettled Spirit, unceasing palpitations, blurred vision, and insufficient mental capacity are all caused by Yin deficiency being disturbed by hyperactive Yang. Now, with the assistance of sweet-cold properties, the Five Zang organs achieve the effects of calming, stabilizing, stopping, clarifying, opening, and benefiting them. The term "pathogenic factor" mentioned does not refer to external pathogens, but rather to the fact that Yin deficiency leads to vigorous fire consuming Qi; this fire is the pathogenic factor. Now, with the assistance of sweet-cold properties, the pathogenic factors are eliminated. Carefully savoring the classic text, not a single word mentions warming and tonifying to restore Yang. Why do later generations believe in the baseless theories of the Song and Yuan dynasties and instead doubt the sacred classics that opened heaven and illuminated the Way? This condition requires up to two liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) because after massive blood loss, the Zang Yin is extremely deficient. When Yin is deficient, it cannot sustain Yang, and Yang also collapses outwardly. Therefore, two liang are used, possessing concentrated authority and great power, capable of achieving results instantly. However, although Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) has the function of tonifying deficiency, it is contraindicated in coughs. Take advantage of the moment just after major bleeding has stopped, before coughing begins, and drink it urgently. If one sleeps soundly for a night, blood will be generated from the Heart, abundant and unstoppable. Even if liters or dou of blood were lost, replenishing it within a week would leave surplus. If awakened before sleep is sufficient, blood generation will cease. If taken only one or two days after bleeding stops, it will be not only ineffective but harmful. Zhou’s old commentary is also outstanding, but regarding Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) merely as a Qi-tonifying herb is somewhat limited by common views. However, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen)’s ability to tonify Yin differs from Rehmanniae Radix (Di Huang) and Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Gui Ban), which focus solely on tonifying Yin. Etymologically, "Shen" implies participation; its efficacy stands alongside Heaven and Earth and Humanity as the Three Powers. Furthermore, it enters the Lung meridian. The Lung is the bellows of the body. To say it benefits Qi is indeed close to the truth. Cheng Shanling said that for the poor...
