Zhang Ji, courtesy name Zhongjing, was a native of Nanyang during the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was recommended as a Xiaolian (Filial and Incorrupt Candidate) and served as the Taishou (Governor) of Changsha. He authored *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders), which greatly enriched medical prescriptions. Even Bian Que and Cang Gong could not surpass him; later generations honored him as the "Medical Sage" (Yi Sheng).
Sun Simiao was a native of Huayuan in Jingzhao during the Tang Dynasty. Known as a "Sage Child" in his youth, he declined summons from Emperor Wen of Sui. When Emperor Taizong ascended the throne, he summoned Sun again and appointed him as Jianyi Dafu (Censor), but Sun firmly declined. He secluded himself in Mount Taibai, studied Daoist practices to cultivate Qi, acquired methods for transcendence, had profound knowledge of astronomy, and meticulously researched medicine. He authored *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) in thirty volumes.
Zhu Gong, pseudonym Wuqiu Zi, was a native of Wuxing during the Song Dynasty. He had deep expertise in Shanghan (Cold Damage Disorders) and authored *Huo Ren Shu* (Book to Save Lives). During the reign of Emperor Huizong (Dao Jun Huang Di), he presented the book at the imperial court and was granted the titles of Fengyi Lang and Medical Doctor. The sections discussing summerheat (Shu) are recorded in Jie'an's works and are not reproduced here separately.
Liu Wansu, courtesy name Shouzhen, was a native of Hejian during the Jin Dynasty. Intelligent and erudite since childhood, he once met an unusual person who gave him wine until he was drunk. Upon waking, he thoroughly comprehended medical arts and wrote *Yunqi Yaozhi Lun* (Discourse on the Essentials of Six Qi Theory), *Jingyuan Xuanming Lun* (Discourse on Elucidating the Mysterious Manifestations), and *Suwen Xuanji Yuanbing Shi* (Original Causes of Diseases According to the Mysteries of the Suwen). However, he favored cool/cold formulas, focusing primarily on descending Heart Fire and nourishing Kidney Water. He styled himself as Tongxuan Chushi (Recluse of Profound Mystery).
Zhang Yuansu, courtesy name Jiegu, was a native of Yizhou during the Jin Dynasty. He took the Tongzi Ju examination at age eight and the Jingyi Jinshi examination at age twenty-seven but failed due to violating ancestral temple naming taboos. He then turned to medicine, mastering it thoroughly. His academic lineage was deeply inherited by Li Dongyuan; his specific theories are not recorded here separately.
Li Gao, courtesy name Mingzhi, pseudonym Dongyuan, was a native of Zhenyang during the Yuan Dynasty. He loved learning in his youth,博览经史 (broadly studied classics and history), and particularly enjoyed medicine. He donated a thousand pieces of gold to study under Zhang Yuansu, inheriting his entire profession. He was called a "Medical Sage" at the time, and *Dongyuan Shi Shu* (Ten Books of Dongyuan) consists mostly of his writings.
Zhu Zhenheng, courtesy name Yanxiu, was respected by scholars as Mr. Danxi. He was a native of Yiwu, Wuzhou, at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. He loved learning from childhood, memorizing thousands of words daily. He received the transmission of Zhu Xi's learning through four generations from Xu Wen Yi. When his mother fell ill, he sighed, saying, "If a scholar masters one skill to extend benevolence to all things, even if he does not serve as an official in his time, it is equivalent to serving." Thus, he abandoned civil service examinations and devoted himself entirely to medicine, becoming a great master of medical achievement.
Fang Guang, courtesy name Yue Zhi, pseudonym Gu An, was a native of Xiuning. In his leisure from Confucian studies, he paid attention to medical classics, becoming a famous doctor skilled in using Danxi's (Zhu Zhenheng's) methods.
Wang Lun, courtesy name Ru Yan, pseudonym Jie Zhai, was a native of Cixi, Zhejiang. He rose to the position of Buzheng (Intendant) of Guangdong. Due to his father's illness, he became proficient in medicine and authored *Ming Yi Za Zhuo* (Miscellaneous Notes of a Clear Doctor), expounding upon ideas not fully developed by Danxi. The world highly respected and trusted him.
Tao Hua, courtesy name Shangwen, pseudonym Jie An, was a famous doctor in Yuhang. He studied Confucian texts in his youth and had extensive knowledge of various schools of thought. He authored *Shanghan Suo Yan* (Trivial Words on Cold Damage), expounding on ideas not covered by Zhang Zhongjing, which became widely popular. During the Zhengtong era, he was summoned to court but returned home citing illness; people of the time praised his high principles.
Yu Tuan, courtesy name Tianmin, pseudonym Hengde Laoren, was a native of Huaxi during the Zhengde era. He authored *Yi Xue Zheng Zhuan* (Orthodox Transmission of Medicine), *Yi Xue Quan Yu* (Origins of Medicine), and *Yi Xue Ji Cheng* (Compilation of Medicine). He was a master of Qi-Huang (Traditional Chinese Medicine).
Li Chan, courtesy name Wenqing, was a native of Nanfeng, Jiangxi. Born into a Confucian family, he studied poetry and rites, aspiring to benefit the world. He extensively collected ancient and modern prescriptions and theories, authoring *Yi Xue Ru Men* (Introduction to Medicine). Although sometimes constrained by his times, his precision and detail rival those of Huaxi (Yu Tuan).
Wang Kentang, courtesy name Yutai, pseudonym Sun An, was a native of Jintan. He passed the Jinshi examination in the Ji-Chou year of the Wanli era and was appointed as Hanlin Jiancha (Hanlin Reviewer). His essays were profound and widely recited throughout the realm. He was especially renowned for his expertise in Qi-Huang (Traditional Chinese Medicine). His works include *Zheng Zhi Zhun Sheng* (Standard Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment) and *Zheng Zhi Lei Fang* (Classified Formulas for Diagnosis and Treatment), which were widely circulated. With keen insight and meticulous analysis, he strove to emulate the ancients.
Note: Those who have gained fame through medical arts since ancient times are too numerous to list completely. Here, we select only those closely related to the treatment of summerheat (Shu), recording their theories and prescriptions, and noting their names. This allows future practitioners of Qi-Huang (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to read their books, investigate their lives, and feel inspired admiration. Who knows if they will not compete with ancient figures such as Changshang Jun and Bo Yuan, achieving similar renown?
