The above herbs are chopped into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose is five qianbi (a small spoon measure). Add one and a half zhong (a cup measure) of water, boil until eight parts remain. Remove the dregs and take hot. The remaining dregs are boiled twice more, combined into one dose, and taken on an empty stomach.
Summerheat pathogenic factors causing disease manifest as febrile diseases, accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, and cholera-like syndrome. After a long duration, malaria and dysentery may occur. For cholera-like syndrome, malaria, and dysentery, medical texts have specialized chapters and detailed treatment methods, so they are not fully recorded here. Instead, the main formula with rapid efficacy is listed below.
When summerheat qi enters the abdomen, it causes nausea, abdominal pain, upper vomiting and lower diarrhea, with watery stools like a gushing stream. This is due to the sudden outbreak of summerheat fire, leading to dysfunction of ascending and descending mechanisms, and confusion of clear and turbid qi. The discharged fluids are the jinye (body fluids) of the five zang organs, which should be stopped quickly. Use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) or Weiling Tang (Stomach and Five-Ingredient Decoction) to promote urination, clear heat, and strengthen the viscera. In severe cases, use Guiling Ganlu Yin (Cassia Twig and Poria Sweet Dew Decoction). Occasionally, this condition involves food stagnation; physicians mistakenly diagnose it as dietary injury and use purgatives, which is erroneous. Some argue that turbid pathogens should be expelled, unaware that jinye has suddenly dried up and yuanqi (primordial qi) is instantly damaged; immediate cessation of symptoms is the best approach. If there is vomiting and diarrhea without any discharge, it is called Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera), which can cause instant death. Urgently use fried salt water or Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) to induce vomiting. Once unblocked, rescue is easier. Danxi also used Lizhong Tang (Middle-Warming Decoction) for vomiting, but fearing heat generation, he did not record the formula.
Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) transforms phlegm and promotes qi circulation. It is frequently decocted for dry cholera to induce vomiting, replacing Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder). Gouti has a harsh nature and damages the stomach, whereas this medicine benefits phlegm resolution with a mild nature.
Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed, one qian five fen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, stir-fried with ginger juice, one qian), Yun Fuling (Poria, skin removed, one qian two fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, three fen)
Chop the herbs, decoct with water, and take orally.
