In the *Xinwen Bao* (News Daily), there is a short article titled "The Whole Body is Diseased," authored by Zhang'er Heshang. It states that after Mr. Ge Gongzhen's body was dissected by physicians of the Red Cross, it was found that besides suffering from sepsis and peritonitis, his lungs, stomach, waist, heart, and brain all had issues; truly, one could say "the whole body is diseased." Mr. Ge worked as a journalist, and his frail and sickly physique reveals his daily toil. Once myriad diseases arose, he could no longer sustain himself and passed away, which is indeed tragic.
Ge Gongzhen suffered from myriad diseases. Besides sepsis and peritonitis, his lungs, stomach, waist, heart, and brain were all diseased. However, when Ge entered the hospital for treatment, although Western medicine physicians examined him carefully, they failed to detect these conditions. This demonstrates that the scientific medical skills of Western medicine are merely so-so. Initially misdiagnosed as appendicitis (Intestinal Vermiform Process Inflammation), only after surgical intervention did they realize it was peritonitis, and later identified it as sepsis. They made repeated errors and failed to detect diseases in his lungs, stomach, waist, heart, and brain until post-mortem dissection revealed them. Thus, we can see that the scientific medical skills of Western medicine are merely so-so. When Lu Shie says that Western medical scholarship has collapsed, it is still being polite and giving credit where it is due. Speaking frankly, with such results, it hardly deserves to be called scholarship. If there is no scholarship to begin with, how can there be a collapse? (Observer: These extreme remarks about Western medicine should be viewed through a historical lens. Editor's Note.)
**The Blunt Exposure of Western Diagnostic Methods:** How much knowledge and skill does Western medicine actually possess? I am ashamed to say I am not a Western physician, so I do not know, nor do I dare to underestimate others or comment lightly. Now, seeing Mr. Cheng Hanzhang's major work, titled "From the Death of Ge Gongzhen to Clinical Diagnosis and Pathological Anatomy," I admire it greatly. I admire this Mr. Cheng for his "fidelity," unlike other Western physicians who are full of charlatanry.
Mr. Cheng inadvertently confesses, laying bare the conflict between clinical diagnosis and pathological anatomy. He lists seven types of causative bacteria for sepsis and eighteen sequelae of sepsis. From this, we can see that in diagnosing diseases, whether Western medicine makes mistakes or possesses true insight without any error, it is merely groping blindly like playing hide-and-seek among those seven types and eighteen sequelae. This is even more confusing than trying to catch the moon in the clouds or viewing flowers in the fog.
I have said that treating diseases with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is like playing chess; although skills may vary, it is open to the public, heard and seen by all.
Below is Mr. Cheng Hanzhang's major work, published in *New Medicine and Society*.
Distinguished journalist Mr. Ge Gongzhen died unfortunately after being treated by Dr. Dong of the Chinese Red Cross. Regardless of whether one had personal interactions with him, we mourn his loss together. We regret the loss of a pillar of China's journalism. The author had no prior acquaintance with Mr. Ge, having only read his writings and admired his talent through newspapers and publications, forming a spiritual connection. In recent years, I have lamented the increasing foreign aggression, while above and below, people exploit opportunities to compete in the market, fighting amongst themselves over trivial private interests, even resorting to lawsuits. Looking around society, it resembles a thorny bush. Therefore, I have secluded myself, declining guests and cutting off social interactions, spending my days reading newspapers, feeling as if watching movies, with scenes changing endlessly.
In the past few days, besides the surging news tide, reports regarding the aftermath of Mr. Ge's death have appeared. Due to the autopsy conducted according to Mr. Ge's will (one of his last wishes), the pathological findings differed from the original clinical diagnosis. Those sympathetic to Mr. Ge, implicitly, cannot help but offer criticism akin to the *Spring and Autumn Annals*. However, if we read more medical texts and speak calmly and fairly, we can assert that a physician's clinical diagnosis does not necessarily fully align with pathological anatomical findings, and this is not limited to sudden diseases.
Having little social interaction, I have never met Dr. Dong, and based on newspaper reports alone, I cannot confirm Mr. Ge's disease name. Today, hearing Dr. Dong's account, it seems undeniable that Mr. Ge's cause of death was sepsis. Sepsis, also known as pyemia, has many causative bacteria, such as streptococcus, staphylococcus, meningococcus, putrefactive bacteria, E. coli, pneumococcus, gonococcus, etc., among which streptococcus is the most virulent.
Sepsis mostly occurs secondary to various other diseases, such as after childbirth, abortion, trauma, dental caries, otitis media, dysentery, liver abscess, cancer, cholangitis, appendicitis (commonly and by quacks called "blind intestine inflammation"), periappendiceal abscess (also commonly and by quacks called "blind intestine inflammation"), pneumonia, bronchitis, rhinitis, lung abscess, empyema, lung gangrene, gonorrhea, urethritis, osteomyelitis, etc., all of which can lead to secondary sepsis. Therefore, we cannot agree with the discussion in both old and new medical circles that "when we usually suffer from throat diseases, these bacteria often cause trouble, but because normal people have strong resistance, it causes little harm." (See *Shishi Xinbao*, October 31st). This statement is plausible yet incorrect. Throat diseases occurring during scarlet fever are indeed caused by hemolytic streptococcus, while diphtheria (commonly called white membrane throat disease) is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae (old name: Klebs-Loeffler bacillus).
Viewing it this way, clinical diagnoses might be otitis media, pneumonia, appendicitis, and other various diseases, but if the cause of death is sepsis, bacteria must be found in the blood during pathological anatomy. Consequently, this naturally conflicts with the clinical diagnosis, and absolutely cannot be used as a handle for blame.
Finally, I have one word for the public. In recent years, unfortunate incidents in the medical field have occurred repeatedly. The fault lies not in medical negligence, but in doctors being "too enthusiastic" (completely opposite to negligence). Often, for many diseases, there is no need to stick to one's own views or copy European and American practices blindly. Instead, using a "swallowing dates whole" approach, they force surgical interventions on conditions that do not require surgery. For example, self-proclaimed school hygiene physicians often force children to undergo tonsillectomies. If, unfortunately, improper surgical results lead to traumatic infections and disputes arise, this malpractice stems from peddling and conservatism, revealing a lack of actual knowledge. Although "times make heroes," observing domestic hospitals, which ones are not filled with heaven's favorites? What more can I say?
Since the prevalence of movable type printing, the publishing world has been vibrant. Every year, month, and day sees the release of numerous new works. Especially in our TCM circle, there are monthly, quarterly, ten-day, weekly, and daily journals, and each organization and individual has their own publications. At first glance, TCM appears extremely developed. Little do they know that upon closer inspection of the content, one cannot help but be secretly shocked.
Why is this? It turns out that half of it is incomprehensible. Things like dysentery bacilli, malaria parasites, tuberculosis bacilli, cerebral hemorrhage, intestinal hemorrhage, leukocytes, erythrocytes, lymph nodes, iron, salts, proteins, starches, pleurisy, peritonitis, meningitis—various strange terms, too many to record, impossible to name, I wonder where they collected them from.
Someone told me that this group consists of new figures in the TCM field, called "New TCM," bearing the great responsibility of improving TCM. I said, "Oh my, so it is New TCM, my apologies, I truly failed to recognize Mount Tai."
But I must ask, how is it new? Where does the novelty come from, and what is its source? That person replied, "New theories naturally come from Europe. Western medicine is universal worldwide; how can our country be different? The great work of New TCM now is to completely overturn old TCM theories and adopt Western medical terminology to refresh people's senses."
I said: Improving TCM is so convenient then? Following behind others, copying their fame, bringing over Western terms, mixing up names and forcing square pegs into round holes, and calling it done? In my view, such works cannot be recognized as legitimate TCM works. I define them simply as Western medicine books in Chinese, Western medicine works in Chinese, which have nothing to do with our TCM. Look at Japanese Western medicine books; most are in Japanese language. Yet the Japanese do not claim to have improved Eastern medicine; they still call it Western medicine from Taixi (the West).
How discerning people are! They know Han medicine is Han medicine, and Western medicine is Western medicine. They cannot be borrowed or compromised. Each has its own spirit and benefits. Why must we twist them together, mix them in a pile, fabricate the term "New TCM" to deceive people? What bitterness is this?
Moreover, Western medicine has its own basis and unchanging therapeutic methods. If you use Western disease names but do not use Western treatments, it is wrong; if you use Western disease names but still use TCM treatments, it is also wrong. Lacking a basis for advance or retreat, beware of someone coming after you, beware of lawsuits.
**The Collapse of Western Medical Scholarship:** The knowledge, skills, and experience of Western medicine, following the death of Ge Gongzhen, have fully exposed their weaknesses. Mr. Cheng Hanzhang's involuntary confession has already been introduced to readers. Now, I introduce again the major work of Mr. A Xin.
The most striking sentence in Mr. A Xin's work is that, based on the autopsy results, Mr. Ge indeed suffered from acute peritonitis and acute appendicitis, which is also acute epiperitonitis of the cecum. It also stated that pressing on Mr. Ge's right lower abdomen caused slight pain, but there was no hard mass. Later, due to white blood cells increasing to 13,000 and temperature gradually rising from 37°C to 40.1°C, along with other symptoms like poor appetite and pale complexion, all indicated signs of acute appendicitis. It also stated that before surgery, regardless of how famous a doctor in the world, they would have to diagnose acute appendicitis. It also stated that currently, the medical field has no cure for peritonitis; at least 99 out of 100 patients with peritonitis are doomed to die.
Ashamed to admit I am not a Western physician, originally, the scientific diagnostic method confirmed three diseases without error from the start: first, acute peritonitis; second, acute appendicitis; third, acute epiperitonitis of the cecum. If this is wrong, switch to that; if explanation A doesn't fit, switch to explanation B. Very flexible, extremely clever. Like us in TCM, we do not have this method.
Before surgery, regardless of how famous a doctor in the world, they would have to diagnose acute appendicitis. This shows that Western academic practice merely uses humans as test subjects; they don't know before surgery, only knowing after. Such is the skill of Western medicine.
Currently, the medical field has no cure for peritonitis; at least 99 out of 100 patients with peritonitis are doomed to die. This is clearly shirking responsibility, as if Mr. Ge Gongzhen died too late, died too slowly. Since Western medicine lacks such skill and knowledge, in the future, when encountering difficult cases, just push them to us in TCM for treatment. Following old customs, I still publish Mr. A Xin's work as follows.
Mr. Ge Gongzhen died in the Hongqiao Sanatorium on the seventh day after returning from his tour of Europe.
It is said that Mr. Ge died of appendicitis. But after Mr. Ge passed away, rumors spread from all sides that he did not die of appendicitis, because the autopsy of Mr. Ge showed his cecum was intact. So, what exactly was the cause of Mr. Ge's death?
Thinking that anyone slightly concerned with the cause of Mr. Ge's death would want to know, I specially visited Dr. Ai Shiguang at the National Medical College, who performed the autopsy on Mr. Ge's body. Mr. Ai is a professor at the National Medical College and undertook the important task of autopsying Mr. Ge. The main motivations for the autopsy were: First, to follow Mr. Ge's own will; Second, hoping to check the true cause of Mr. Ge's death.
According to Dr. Ai, the autopsy work began at 3:15 PM on the 22nd (Mr. Ge died at 3:00 PM). The examination results can roughly be summarized in four points: First, the "sphenoid sinus" above Mr. Ge's nose (on the forehead) showed signs of inflammation. We know that sphenoid sinus inflammation is generally caused by daily fever or colds.
Second, examination of Mr. Ge's bladder showed subacute inflammation, and simultaneously, the tissues on both sides of the bladder showed signs of inflammation.
Third, the prostate was also inflamed. In the lower right part of the ureter (that part is very close to the cecum), there was pus and severe swelling. Meanwhile, the tissues on both sides of the peritoneum also had pus, and even worse, there was more pus in the abdominal cavity.
Fourth, samples of pus from Mr. Ge's ureter, his heart blood, abdominal pus, and urine were tested using bacterial culture methods, all revealing a type of hemolytic streptococcus.
Based on the results of this autopsy, Mr. Ge indeed suffered from acute peritonitis and acute appendicitis, which is also acute epiperitonitis of the cecum. (What is written above was spoken by Mr. Ai and written down casually by the reporter. If there are inaccuracies, they still rely on Mr. Ai's autopsy diagnosis report.) As for external claims that Dr. Dong Bingqi of the Chinese Red Cross Hospital misdiagnosed appendicitis, according to Mr. Ai, the reason is as follows: Dr. Dong examined Mr. Ge at 2:00 PM on the 21st. The result was that pressing on Mr. Therefore, at 5:28 PM that day, Dr. Dong performed surgery on Mr. Ge. The surgical inspection results showed edema in the inner abdominal wall muscles and yellow fluid in the abdominal cavity. At this time, Mr. Dong concluded it was peritonitis.
However, according to Mr. Ai, before surgery, Mr. Ge's right abdominal pain, ureter swelling, increased white blood cells, and high fever meant that regardless of how famous a doctor in the world, they would have to diagnose acute appendicitis, because these symptoms are inevitable signs of acute appendicitis.
The day after Mr. Ge's surgery, despite injections of cardiac stimulants and saline solution, it was too late. By 2:00 PM, Mr. Ge passed away.
Mr. Ai said that currently, the medical field has no cure for peritonitis; at least 99 out of 100 patients with peritonitis are doomed to die.
The autopsy report should reach Mr. Ge's family tomorrow or the day after. As for whether this diagnosis report can be published, it depends on the decision of the Ge family.
Everyone always says that regarding the Qi transformation in the human body, Western medicine does not recognize it. Regarding everything tangible, Western medicine uses scientific methods to identify, and comparatively, it has a bit more true insight. Below, seeing how Western medicine treated Mr. Ge Gongzhen's condition: the cecum, peritoneum, and appendix are clearly three distinct things located in three different places, yet they still couldn't figure it out or distinguish it clearly. If something so obvious is like this, let alone the subtle and complex aspects. Thus, we can know that Western medicine is still a mess regarding everything tangible [Note: Currently, it is not a mess]. Qi transformation is needless to mention. Therefore, Western medical scholarship, by this year, this month, this day, this hour, has completely declared bankruptcy [Note: This is still an extreme remark against Western medicine. Any matter is gradually perfected in the process of development. TCM has a five-thousand-year history, and even today it cannot be called perfect. Moreover, Western medicine had not been introduced to our country for long at that time. How could it not be immature? Readers are urged not to blindly worship Western medicine and lose their lives.]

TCM is Scientific
On November 7th, the Director of the Shanghai Branch of the National Medical Hall held an inauguration oath-taking ceremony at the Hushe Club. Education Bureau Director Mr. Pan Gongzhan, appointed by the Central National Medical Hall, served as the swearing-in witness. Director Pan's address expressed infinite hope for the National Medical Branch. The most important point was that National Medical scholarship is progressive, not conservative; National Medical theory is scientific, not unscientific; the National Medical Hall belongs to all practitioners of National Medicine, not just the director and directors. He had a deep understanding and detailed guidance regarding National Medical theory, status, and the relationship between National Medicine and the people. I am deeply impressed.
And what I admire most is the phrase "National Medicine is Science." This phrase is truly golden advice.
*Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders) is the ancestor of TCM formula books. Why do we revere it so much? Because Zhang Zhongjing, over two thousand years ago, listed evidence, pulse images, determined treatment methods, and composed prescriptions in his book that have been verified hundred times and ten thousand times. Other books may have occasional errors, but in Zhang Zhongjing's book, not a single error can be found among ten thousand checks.
For example, Taiyang Disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Taiyang meridian) characterized by stiffness and pain in the head and neck, and a floating pulse, was thus in the Han Dynasty.
