Treatment for chronic cough lasting thirty years.
Dong Hua (Kalanchoe flos), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Dai Zhe Shi (Haematitum), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Long Gan (Ligni Torrefactum) (each 1 liang).
Process the above six herbs, sift them, and form pills resembling seven stars clustered together, sized like broad beans. Place the mouth of a bamboo tube against the pill, inhale one by one into the throat, allowing the medicine to enter the stomach. Take three pills after meals daily. Continue this regimen for four days. On the fourth day, prepare the seven-star clustered pills again. Take a piece of meat, roast it until cooked, and roll the pills over the meat so that the medicinal powder coats the meat evenly. Lie on your back, chew the meat thoroughly, and swallow the juice slowly, allowing the medicinal power to intensely stimulate the throat and the toxic qi to enter the throat. When the medicinal power is exhausted, swallow everything; the disease will be cured. (If not cured, repeat the process as described. Mutton, beef, or venison may be used; do not use pork.)
Spread prepared mugwort (Ai Ye) thinly on paper. The paper should be four cun wide. Then sprinkle sulfur powder (Liu Huang) onto the mugwort, ensuring even distribution. Take one reed stem (Di Cao), cut to the length of the paper, and roll it into ten rolls. First, ignite the end of the reed closest to the lower body. Inhale the smoke exiting from the anal opening, inducing vomiting, then stop. Repeat the fumigation the next morning as before, once or twice daily, until naturally cured. Consume white rice porridge; avoid all other foods.
Another prescription: Grind one liang of Xun Huang (Realgar) into fine powder. Mix it with wax paper and the Realgar powder, blend evenly, and roll as per the previous method. Fumigate as described above, once or twice daily, stopping when vomiting occurs. After seven days of recuperation, nourish the body with mutton soup.
Yet another prescription: Take a piece of worn blue cloth four cun wide. Spread mugwort on it, then spread Qing Fan (Alumen) powder on the mugwort, followed by a small amount of Xun Huang (Realgar) powder, then a small amount of salt, and finally a small amount of Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) powder. Quickly roll the bundle and burn it. Place the burning bundle into a dry jar. Cover the head with paper, leaving only a small hole, and inhale the smoke slowly, swallowing it until vomiting occurs. If chest tightness or distress arises, pause briefly until the smoke is consumed. Use once or twice daily; using three rolls without finishing them indicates recovery. Avoid greasy food for twenty-one days.
Discussion states: For conditions involving upward rebellious qi, many cases are cured by emetics, while others are resolved through acupuncture and moxibustion. One should deeply contemplate these methods.
For coughing, moxa-burn each point located at the boundary between black and white skin below both nipples, 100 moxa cones each, and the condition will resolve. Alternatively, use a ring of cattail leaves surrounding the circumference of the nipple around the torso, ensuring front and back alignment. Locate the midpoint of the spinal gap and apply 10 moxa cones. Measure the width of the mouth horizontally with a string, fold the string, and measure down from the spine. Apply 80 moxa cones at each end of the string's span, repeating this process three times over three days. The endpoints correspond to the correct measurement of the mouth's closure. Counting downward from Da Zhui (GV14), locate the space between the fifth and sixth thoracic vertebrae, in the center of the depression (this is Shen Dao, GV11). Apply moxa cones according to the patient's age. This treats upward rebellious qi.
Locate the tender spot at the outer edge of the transverse crease of the flexed elbow bone, and apply 14 moxa cones.
For upward rebellious qi with coughing, shortness of breath, chest fullness, and inability to eat, moxa-burn Fei Mu (BL13) 50 cones.
For upward rebellious qi with coughing, shortness of breath, wind-lao (wind-induced consumptive disease), and various ailments, moxa-burn Jian Jing (GB21) 200 cones.
For upward rebellious qi, shortness of breath, coughing with chest and back pain, moxa-burn Feng Men (BL12) and Re Fu (BL12 adjacent area) 100 cones each.
For upward rebellious qi with coughing, chest fullness, shortness of breath, and radiating back pain, moxa-burn Ju Que (CV14) and Qi Men (LR14) 50 cones each.
For upward rebellious qi with chest fullness, coughing, and shortness of breath, moxa-burn Yun Men (LU2) 50 cones.
For upward rebellious qi with coughing, chest bi (obstruction) pain, moxa-burn Xiong Tang (EX-B2) 100 cones; do not needle.
For upward rebellious qi with coughing, moxa-burn Dan Zhong (CV17) 50 cones.
For upward rebellious qi with qi obstruction, coughing, cold throat, hoarse voice, and throat cracking, moxa-burn Tian Qu (CV22, also known as Tian Tu) 50 cones.
For rebellious qi, deficiency-lao (consumptive disease), cold injury, sorrow and indignation, muscle and tendon spasms, internal coughing, diarrhea with abdominal fullness, throat obstruction, neck stiffness, intestinal hemorrhoids, genital urgency, epistaxis, bone pain, difficulty in urination and defecation, nasal dryness, irritability, mania, wandering, and rapid breathing changes—twenty-two conditions in total—all treated by moxa-burning Jue Gu (GB39) 50 cones. The acupoint is located 3 cun above the lateral malleolus in the depression.
