[Treating the Nine Types of Heartache and Other Conditions]
Treats the nine types of heartache, as well as cold qi rushing upward, injuries from falling off horses or from heights, blood disorders, etc. (1. Worm heartache; 2. Zhu [infectious/pestilential] heartache; 3. Wind heartache; 4. Palpitation heartache; 5. Food heartache; 6. Drink [fluid retention] heartache; 7. Cold heartache; 8. Heat heartache; 9. Migratory heartache. These are called the Nine Pains.)
Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) (2 liang each) Ganjiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma) (2 liang each) Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Badou (Crotonis Fructus) Sheng Yelangdu (Fresh Stellerae Radix) (4 liang)
Grind the above six ingredients into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take three pills on an empty stomach. For sudden attack by evil pathogens causing abdominal distension and pain with inability to speak, take five pills, once daily. For chronic accumulation of cold flowing into the chest and heart, also take this medicine. Maintain proper rest and care; it is miraculously effective. (The formula in *Jingui Yaolue* uses 3 liang of Fuzi, and 1 liang each of Ganjiang and Yelangya [Stellerae Radix].)
Formula for Treating the Nine Types of Heartache:
Take one handful of fresh Huai branch (Sophorae Tomentosae Ramulus) growing in the direction of the Tai Sui deity that year, remove the two ends, chop it, boil in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng, and take in one dose.
Formula for Treating Chest Bi (Pipi), Various Rebellious Qi, and Suspended Pain:
Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (2 liang each) Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar) (0.5 jin)
Chop the first two ingredients, boil in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, strain, add Jiaoyi, and divide into three doses. (Zhang Zhongjing's formula uses 5 pieces of Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and does not use Jiaoyi; *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* uses 5 pieces of Zhishi and 2 liang of Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), totaling five ingredients.)
Formula for Treating Heartache Radiating to the Back and Backache Radiating to the Heart:
Wutou (Aconiti Radix) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (0.5 liang each) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) (1 liang each)
Grind the above five ingredients into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take three pills before meals, three times daily. If ineffective, slightly increase the dosage. (Fan Wang's formula does not use Fuzi; administration method is otherwise the same.)
Formula for Treating Heartache:
Boil Taobai pi (Pruni Persicae Cortex) juice, take appropriately on an empty stomach. (Cui Shi's formula treats Zhu heartache.)
Formula for Treating Sudden Heartache or Feeling Like Evil Attack with Uncontrollable Salivation and Frequent Urge to Vomit:
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (10 jin)
Chop the single ingredient, boil in 1 dan of water until reduced to 2 dou, strain, add 2 dou of Kujiu (Vinegar), and decoct again until reduced to 5 sheng. Add Doudahuangmo (Powdered Soybean) and continue boiling until it can be formed into pills. Roll into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take 30–40 pills at a time with 1 sheng of wine, once daily. Vomiting and diarrhea should occur. If there is no vomiting or diarrhea, soak another 2 jin of Kushen in wine and take the pills; this is better. It treats not only abdominal pain, sudden heartache, bone pain, etc., but all diseases within the abdomen, as well as chronic cold and blood stasis.
Formula for Treating Sudden Evil Attack Causing Heartache:
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (3 liang)
Chop the single ingredient, boil in 1.5 sheng of good vinegar until reduced to 8 he. Those with strong constitution take in one dose; the elderly and children divide into two doses.
Another Formula: Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (1 liang)
Chop the single ingredient, boil in 4 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng, divide into three doses.
Formula for Treating Worm Heartache:
Grind Lesi (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos) into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take 40 pills, washed down with sweet water, once daily. The dose may be increased to 50 pills. Avoid alcohol and meat.
Another Formula: Grind 1 liang of Lesi into powder, mix with one cup of warm vinegar, take on an empty stomach; the worms should be vomited out.
Another Formula: Take 1 he of Qi (Lac), (see the section on Nourishing Life and Ingestibles later); Lac is the primary treatment for all worm heartaches.
