(Discussion: One piece; Formulas: Thirty prescriptions; Moxibustion Method: One piece)
Discussion states: Infants have not yet been exposed to frost and snow, therefore they do not suffer from Cold Damage (Shanghan). Adults who have long been free from cold environments and subsequently injured by cold pathogens are excluded from this discussion. However, regarding abnormal seasonal qi (atypical climatic conditions), infants can also be affected. In years of epidemic outbreaks, newborns are prone to suffering from macular diseases (such as erythema or rash). The treatment principles for these seasonal epidemic conditions follow the same methods as those for adults, with the exception that the dosages of medicinal materials are slightly smaller and the properties of the medicines are cooler.
Prescription for treating infants under one hundred days old suffering from Cold Damage, presenting with epistaxis (nosebleed), fever, vomiting, and regurgitation:
Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦门冬) [18 zhu]; Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao); Halloysitum Rubrum (Han Shui Shi); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [each 0.5 liang]; Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) [8 zhu].
The above five medicinal materials are coarsely crushed. Decoct with two and a half sheng of water until one sheng remains. Administer one ge per dose, three times daily.
Prescription for treating young children suffering from Cold Damage:
Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药); Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩); Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻); Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) [each 0.5 liang].
The above four medicinal materials are coarsely crushed. Decoct with three sheng of water until nine ge remain. Strain and discard the dregs. Divide into five doses. For children aged one year, divide into three doses.
Prescription for treating young children suffering from Cold Damage, presenting with fever, cough, and heat in the head and face:
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄); Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang, 生姜); Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [each 1 liang]; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心); Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao); Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) [each 0.5 liang]; Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [10 seeds].
The above eight medicinal materials are coarsely crushed. Decoct with four sheng of water until one and a half sheng remain. Divide into two doses. If the child is younger, reduce the dosage according to judgment.
Prescription for treating pediatric Cold Damage:
Puerariae Lobatae Juice (Gegen Zhi, 葛根汁); Bambusae Sap (Dan Zhu Li, 淡竹沥) [each 6 ge].
Mix the above two ingredients. For children aged two to three years, divide into three doses. For infants under one hundred days, adjust the dosage carefully. Raw consumption is not recommended; decocting before administration is preferable.
Prescription for treating pediatric Seasonal Qi disease (Shiqi):
Three liang of peach leaves, pounded. Decoct with five sheng of water for ten boiling cycles. Extract the juice. Apply externally by washing/spraying five to six times daily. If the condition recurs, burn two pieces of male rat feces (Xiong Shu Shi, 雄鼠屎) and administer orally mixed with water.
Prescription for treating pediatric Cold Damage where the illness persists for a long time without resolution, worsens after recovery, and results in emaciation and skeletal prominence:
Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子) [10 zhu]; Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦门冬); Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连); Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩); Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄); Peucedani Radix (Qianhu, 前胡) [each 6 zhu]; Mirabilite (Mangxiao, 芒硝) [5 zhu]; Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) [1 liang].
The above ten medicinal materials are coarsely crushed. Decoct with three sheng of water until one and a half sheng remain. Administer two ge per dose. Stop administration once bowel movement occurs. Adjust the dosage up or down based on the child's size.
