Prescription for treating chronic edema with abdominal distension resembling a drum.
Take one dou (a unit of volume) of black soybeans [Glycine max], stir-fry until fragrant, being careful not to burn them excessively. Remove the skins and grind into a fine powder, then sieve. Mix with maltose porridge; this mixture can be consumed. Initially take one ge (a unit of volume), gradually increasing the dose. If the initial dose is too large, it may later taste unpleasant. After finishing this course, prepare another batch, continuing until recovery. Avoid fatty and greasy foods. When thirsty, drink vegetable broth. Strictly avoid alcohol, meat, pork, chicken, fish, raw/cold foods, vinegar-pickled items, and slippery/greasy foods. Also observe sexual abstinence. You may consume rice gruel, as well as beef, mutton, rabbit, and venison. This disease is difficult to treat; although various major pills, powders, decoctions, and ointments may provide temporary relief, symptoms often recur later. Only this powder prevents recurrence after recovery. Lifelong consumption ensures lifelong non-recurrence. Regarding forbidden foods (consume sparingly, do not eat salty foods at will, nor other miscellaneous foods).
Another prescription: Powder of Lepidium seed [Lepidii Fructus] and ash of Xanthium fruit [Xanthii Fructus Ash] (each twenty bi, a spoon-like measure).
Mix the above two ingredients with water and take orally, twice daily.
Yet another prescription: Take sinking Sichuan pepper seeds [Zanthoxyli Semen], stir-fry, grind into a paste, and take orally with wine using a fangcunbi (a square-inch scoop measure).
Yet another prescription: Decoct Aristolochia debilis [Aristolochiae Yenshanensis Radix] in water and take orally.
Prescription for treating water qi swelling, abdominal distension, and difficulty in urination:
One sheng (a unit of volume) of Datura seed [Daturae Semen], and one sheep lung [Ovis Aries Lung].
First, wash the sheep lung thoroughly, blanch briefly in hot water, slice thinly, dry in the sun, and grind into powder. Soak the Datura seeds in three-year-old strong vinegar for one shichen (two hours), remove, stir-fry until color changes, cook thoroughly, and grind into a paste. Mix with the lung powder and honey, pound for three thousand strokes to form pills the size of wu-tong seeds. Take four pills after meals, once after a meal has been digested for some time, taken with Ophiopogon Drink, three times daily. The therapeutic effect is indicated by dryness in the throat, sticky mouth, and delirious speech. After several days, if urination becomes abundant and smooth, it is a good sign. Shan Lian cured Siye Wei using this method. Wei's nephew, Yun Biao, sent this formula stating: "It has been used many times with miraculous efficacy."
Ophiopogon tuber [Ophiopogonis Tuber] (twenty-five pieces), Rice [Oryzae Sativae Granum] (twenty-five grains).
Boil these two ingredients in one sheng of water until the rice is cooked. Strain the dregs, add the previously prepared pills, and take daily in divided doses.
Prescription for treating edema and promoting diuresis.
Buffalo horn [Bubali Cornu], Stephania root [Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix], Notopterygium rhizome [Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix], Ginseng root [Panacis Ginseng Radix], Salvia root [Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix], Achyranthes root [Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix], Cimicifuga rhizome [Cimicifugae Rhizoma], Saposhnikovia root [Saposhnikoviae Radix], Gentian root [Gentianae Radix], Ginger peel [Zingiberis Pericarpium], Grain husk [Cerealis Gluma], Aster root [Asteris Radix], Apricot kernel [Armeniacae Semen Amarum], Aconite lateral root [Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata], Dendrobium stem [Dendrobii Caulis] (each three liang), Mulberry root bark [Mori Cortex], Tangerine peel [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium], Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma], Alisma rhizome [Alismatis Rhizoma], Poria sclerotium [Poria], Prunus seed [Pruni Semen], Polyporus [Polyporus], Coptis rhizome [Coptidis Rhizoma] (each one liang).
Process the above twenty-three ingredients and sieve into a coarse powder. Decoct using one and a half sheng of water, boil down to extract from three cunbi (three inch-scoop measures) of herbs, yielding one sheng of liquid. Take all at once, twice daily. For those unable to tolerate this dosage, a single administration suffices. This prescription is suitable for patients who have been ill for two to three months or less, primarily treating cases with frequent diarrhea but scanty, obstructed urination. It yields significant results.
