Formula for treating edema with rebellious Qi.
Han Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Zeqiye (Euphorbiae Helioscopiae Herba), Shiwei (Pyrrosiae Folium), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chi Fuling (Polyporus with Red Mycelium), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) (each 3 liang), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (10 liang), Yuliren (Pruni Semen) (5 he).
The above twelve ingredients are processed, sifted into a coarse powder. Boil the amount equivalent to three square-inch scoops in one and a half sheng of water until reduced to eight ge. Strain and take all at once. Three times daily. The treatment is considered effective when urination becomes profuse.
For treating edema, Zhen Quan used this formula while serving as Duke of Ankang.
Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Jiaomu (Semen Zanthoxyli), Mufangji (Cocculus trilobus root or Stephaniae tetrandrae radix - context dependent, here likely distinct from Han Fangji), Tingli (Periplocae Semen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 5 fen), Gansui (Kansui Radix) (12 fen), Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 2 fen), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (7 fen, separately ground).
The above twelve ingredients are ground into powder and formed into pills the size of mulberry seeds using honey. Take five pills with honey water once daily. Gradually increase the dose until therapeutic effect is achieved.
Formula for treating edema and promoting urination and defecation:
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (alternative text suggests Tingli), Mufangji (Cocculus trilobus root or Stephaniae tetrandrae radix) (equal parts).
The above three ingredients are ground into powder and formed into pills the size of mulberry seeds using honey. Take ten pills with warm water. The treatment is considered effective when both urination and defecation become smooth; if ineffective, increase the dose.
Another formula: Qianzi (Semen Koelreuteriae) ground into powder, taken with water, one square-inch scoop once daily. Effective when both urination and defecation become smooth.
Another formula: Tingli (Periplocae Semen) (raw, 4 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (1 liang).
The above two ingredients are ground into powder and formed into pills the size of mulberry seeds using honey. Take seven pills with warm water twice daily. Effective when therapeutic effect is achieved.
Another formula: Yuliren (Pruni Semen) (ground), Flour (each 1 sheng).
Mix the above two ingredients and make seven cakes. Bake thoroughly and eat four hot cakes on an empty stomach. If ineffective, add one cake, up to a total of seven.
Another formula: Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) (3 liang, boiled for three days and nights), Tinglizi (Periplocae Semen), Jiaomu (Semen Zanthoxyli) (each 1 sheng), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (3 liang), Yiyu (Stictae Thallus) (20 pieces), Shuiping (Lemna minor), Gudi (Cucumeris Melo Fructus), Huashi (Talcum) (each 1 liang).
Grind Tingli finely first. Add Shuiyin and continue grinding until no mercury droplets are visible. Separately grind Jiaomu finely. Grind Gudi and Shuiping. Sieve these and mix with the remaining herbs. Combine with honey and pound thirty thousand times to form pills. Initial dose: one pill the size of a mulberry seed. Subsequent doses: two, three, four, five, then six pills. On the seventh day, restart from one pill, increasing again up to six pills per cycle. Upon starting medication, small swellings may appear on the throat, swelling and fullness around the Jiache acupoint, swelling of the gums, and spitting of bloody fragments. Do not be alarmed; these will subside within three to five days, and all suffering will cease. If diarrhea occurs excessively, stop the medication to halt the diarrhea; limit administration to five doses maximum. If the disease persists, resume medication; stop when cured. This formula treats various types of obesity and edema where pressing leaves an indentation, severe cases where arms are too thick to fit into sleeves, and the ten types of severe water swelling that physicians cannot cure. It is highly effective. (Note: *Shen Shi Ji Yan* and Tao's *Gu Jin Lu Yan* do not include Yiyu, Shuiping, Gudi, or Huashi).
