Formula for treating Wind-Edema (Feng Shui), characterized by severe generalized edema, eyes swollen shut and unable to open, shortness of breath nearly to the point of suffocation.
Da Dou (Soybean Seed) (1 sheng) Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) (1 sheng) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Mu Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Zhu Ling (Polypori Sclerotium) (each 4 liang) Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) Wu Tou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) (each 3 liang) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (6 liang) Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (7 liang) Fu Ling (Poria) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 5 liang) Gan Suan (Kansui Radix) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang) Qing Jiu (Clear Wine) (1 sheng).
The above sixteen ingredients are coarsely crushed. Boil Da Dou in 14 sheng of water until reduced to 10 sheng. Remove the beans, add the herbs and wine, and decoct together until 7 sheng remains. Divide into seven doses. Take four times during the day and three times at night. The treatment is considered effective when urination becomes smooth and profuse. Discontinue medication once the edema subsides; it is not necessary to consume the entire dose. If urination is not facilitated, add 1 sheng of raw Da Ji (Kansui Radix) and 2 liang of Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Fructus). This method is infallible. (Note: *Shen Shi Fang* does not include Zhu Ling, Ze Xie, Wu Tou, Ban Xia, or Gan Suan).
Formula for treating Wind-Edema:
Da Dou (Soybean Seed) (3 sheng) Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) (5 sheng, decocted in 2 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng, filtered, reserved as a base liquid). Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each 5 liang) Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Zhu Ling (Polypori Sclerotium) (each 3 liang) Da Ji (Kansui Radix) (1 liang) Kui Zi (Abutili Semen) (1 sheng).
The above thirteen ingredients are coarsely crushed and added to the previously prepared liquid. Decoct until 5 sheng remains. Each dose is 8 he. Take three times daily. The interval between doses should be equivalent to the time it takes a person to walk ten li. Take the second dose after this interval.
Formula for treating generalized flowing edema:
Ma Zi (Hemp Seed) (5 sheng) Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean) (3 sheng) Shang Lu (Phytolaccae Radix) (1 sheng, i.e., Phytolaccae Radix) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (3 liang) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) (1 liang).
The above five ingredients are coarsely crushed. First, pound Ma Zi thoroughly. Boil Ma Zi in 3 dou of water until reduced to 1.3 dou. Filter out the residue, add the other herbs and beans, and decoct until 4 sheng remains. Filter again. Consume the beans and drink the decoction.
Formula for treating new or chronic edema in men and women where sudden exposure to pathogenic wind enters the abdomen, and for women who have recently given birth and exposed themselves to wind while using the toilet, causing wind to enter the viscera. Symptoms include abdominal pain resembling the sensation of a horsewhip, shortness of breath, and coughing.
Take 1 dou of clean Da Dou (Soybean Seed). Boil in 5 dou of water until reduced to 1.5 dou. Clarify the liquid and pour it into a vessel. Add 1.5 dou of fine wine and decoct further until 9 sheng remains. Do not eat food the night before. In the early morning, take 3 sheng on an empty stomach. Cover with warm clothing to induce sweating. After approximately two meal periods, bowel movement should occur. Pathogenic wind will be expelled, and edema will subside. Avoid wind and cold. Recovery is expected within ten days. It is advisable to take this formula on all days except the day the illness began. If the situation is urgent and cannot wait, prepare and take it immediately. If edema does not fully resolve, continue taking it. Once edema improves, take another 3 sheng. If the condition has improved by ninety percent, discontinue use. During the illness, one may drink it freely to maintain the presence of alcohol qi in the body. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* states: After edema subsides, if thirsty, do not drink excessively.)
Another formula: Take a large bundle of Chu Pi (Broussonetiae Cortex) branches and leaves, cut them up, decoct to obtain juice, and use this juice to brew wine. Drink until intoxicated. Within three to four days, edema will gradually subside. It can be taken regularly after recovery. (Another variant uses Zhu Jiao Pi [Zanthoxyli Cortex] branches and leaves).
Another formula: Take a carp measuring 1 chi 5 cun. Soak it in urine overnight. In the early morning, skewer it from mouth to tail with a wooden comb. Roast over low heat until slightly cooked. Remove the skin. Do not eat the night before. Consume the fish in one sitting on an empty stomach. If unable to consume it all at once, divide into two doses. Do not consume salt.
