To treat exterior conditions, for all swelling diseases, it is necessary to attack them from both the interior and exterior using a hundred different methods; one cannot rely on a single fixed formula.
Sheng Shanglu (Radix Phytolaccae Acinosae) (one jin)
Zhu Gao (Porcine Fat) (one jin, decocted to yield two sheng)
Combine the above two ingredients and decoct until yellow, remove the dregs, apply to the swelling by rubbing (mo), or take a small amount internally. Apply to the affected area, cover with paper, and reapply when dry. It will heal within three days.
A formula to treat women with shortness of breath, emaciation due to deficiency, generalized edema, and tight skin, a condition rarely seen by people.
She Xiang (Moschus) (three zhu)
Xiong Huang (Realgar) (six zhu)
Yuan Hua (Flos Genkwa)
Gan Sui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui) (each two fen)
Grind the above four ingredients into powder, take five bi (ancient measuring spoon) with wine. Adjust dosage according to age and constitution for the elderly and young. Alternatively, make pills the size of small beans; strong individuals take seven pills. (The *Duanju* formula lacks Xiong Huang. The *Shenshi Fang* uses honey to make pills the size of large beans, taking two pills three times a day. Treats Sanjiao [Triple Burner] dysfunction leading to fluid retention outside the chest, known as Shui Bing [Water Disease]. When only the abdomen is enlarged and located superficially, use Da She Xiang Wan [Large Musk Pill]. The *Huato Fang* and *Zhoubu Houbei Fang* include Ren Shen [Codonopsis Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma] two fen, made into pills for administration.)
Formula to treat edema caused by Xu Lao [Deficiency Consumption]:
Moxibustion at Taichong (LR3) for one hundred zhuang.
Additionally, moxibustion at Shenshu (BL23).
(Six categories in total)
(One discussion, twenty-nine formulas, fifteen syndromes, one moxibustion method)
Discussion states: Humans are born with physical forms and must maintain self-cultivation and preservation. If regulation and rest are improper, hundreds of diseases will arise. Therefore, as the four seasons change, Yin and Yang alternate in prosperity. When these two qi interact violently, violent qi inevitably emerges. This "violent qi" refers to sudden strong winds and fog, extreme cold or heat occurring within each month. If not avoided in time, humans suddenly encounter these pathogens, which enter the four limbs, abruptly damage the skin, flow into the meridians, causing the couli [pores/skin texture] to become blocked, and Ying Wei [Nutritive and Defensive Qi] to stagnate. Consequently, Yin and Yang qi cannot be vented, transforming into yong ju [carbuncles and sores], ding du [carbuncles and toxic swellings], evil sores, and various swellings. Regarding Ding Zhong [Carbuncles], if not recognized early, they can cause death before noon. Thus, those who practice health preservation must recognize these formulas early, so that no sores or ulcers can escape detection.
When treating Ding Zhong [Carbuncles], prick the center until pain is felt. Then prick the surrounding areas more than ten times to allow blood to flow out. Remove the blood and apply medicine so that the medicinal power enters through the needle holes. If the medicinal power does not reach inside the sore, the treatment will be ineffective.
Furthermore, these swellings often appear on the corners of the mouth, cheeks, or tongue. Seeing red-black colors like beads, with stinging pain affecting the heart, indicates this condition. This results from cold toxins lingering in the skin during autumn and winter, transforming into this disease. If not treated immediately, the root grows day and night, flowing into various meridians, immobilizing the person like an arrow piercing the body. If one does not carefully regulate diet and sexual activity, death will follow swiftly. If not healed after five or six days, seeing fire in the eyes, mental confusion, dry mouth, and irritability indicate imminent death.
First is Mazi Ding [Hemp Seed Carbuncle]. Its appearance is a head rising from the flesh, the size of a millet seed, slightly black in color, with slightly red surroundings and much itching. Avoid eating hemp seeds and wearing hemp clothes; do not walk in hemp fields.
Second is Shi Ding [Stone Carbuncle]. Its appearance is connected to skin and flesh, dark black like black beans, very hard. Pricking does not penetrate deeply; there is dull pain inside the flesh. Avoid contact with tiles, gravel, bricks, and stones.
Third is Xiong Ding [Male Carbuncle]. Its appearance has a black head, with raised sores around the edges exuding serum, containing water, yellow in color, the size of a coin hole, and protruding high. Avoid sexual intercourse.
Fourth is Ci Ding [Female Carbuncle]. Its appearance has a slightly yellow sore head, looking inward like a moxibustion scar, with serum rising around the edges, a concave center that is red, the size of a coin hole. Avoid sexual intercourse.
Fifth is Huo Ding [Fire Carbuncle]. Its appearance resembles scalding by boiling water or burning by fire. The sore head is black, with serum rising around the edges like red millet grains. Avoid exposure to fire or hot objects.
Sixth is Lan Ding [Rotting Carbuncle]. Its appearance is slightly black with white spots. The sore ulcerates and flows with pus and water. The sore shape is the size of a spoon face. Avoid boiling hot food and rotten, smelly substances.
Seventh is Thirty-Six Ding [Thirty-Six Carbuncles]. Its appearance has a black, floating head, shaped like a black bean, with bright red surroundings. One appears today, two tomorrow, three the next day, up to ten. If it reaches thirty-six, it cannot be cured by medicine. If less than thirty-six, it is curable. Commonly called Hei Ding [Black Carbuncle]. Avoid anger and accumulating sorrow and resentment.
Eighth is Sheyan Ding [Snake Eye Carbuncle]. Its appearance has a black head floating on the skin, growing like a small bean, resembling a snake's eye, generally hard. Avoid being looked at by evil eyes, jealous people, or poisons.
Ninth is Yanku Ding [Salt Skin Carbuncle]. Its appearance is the size of a spoon face, surrounded entirely by redness, with black millet-like grains rising. Avoid salty foods.
Tenth is Shuixi Ding [Washing Water Carbuncle]. Its appearance is the size of a coin or a coin hole. The sore head is white outside and black inside, with juice exuding and hardness in the center. Avoid drinking sour water, washing with water, or crossing rivers by swimming.
Eleventh is Daolian Ding [Sickle Carbuncle]. Its appearance is wide and narrow like a leek leaf, one cun long. The flesh on the left side is black as if burned. Avoid injury from pricking, sickles, cutting, or iron knives. It can be treated with medicine.
Twelfth is Fou'ou Ding [Floating Bubble Carbuncle]. Its appearance is curved and round but slightly incomplete, long and narrow like a leek leaf, yellow inside and black outside. Pricking the black area causes no pain; pricking the yellow area causes pain.
Thirteenth is Niujiu Ding [Cow Contraction Carbuncle]. Its appearance is flesh rising, unable to be broken by pinching.
For the above thirteen types of sores, initially there is itching followed by pain, chills followed by fever. After the fever subsides, chills return. There is often heaviness in the four limbs, headache, palpitations, and blurred vision. If severe, there may be vomiting and retching, which are difficult to treat. The Mazi Ding type experiences only itching throughout. The taboo is not to touch or irritate the sore; if touched, it becomes difficult to treat. The Fou'ou Ding and Niujiu Ding types have no taboos; even if untreated, they will not kill. Their symptoms of chills and fever are the same as other Ding types. All can be treated with this formula, with absolute certainty. To know the signs of irritation, look for stiffness of the spine and unbearable extreme pain in the sore.
Formula to treat thirteen types of Ding:
Use Gouqi [Lycium Fruit], which has four names: Tianjing [Heavenly Essence] in spring, Gouqi in summer, quelao [Age-Defying] in autumn, Digut [Earth Bone] in winter. In the first month of spring, collect leaves on the Jian day; in the third month of summer, collect branches on the Jian day; in the ninth month of autumn, collect fruits on the Jian day; in the twelfth month of winter, collect roots on the Jian day. Whenever the beginning of the four seasons meets a Jian day, take the leaves, branches, fruits, and roots, all four types, and sun-dry them. If prepared on the fifth day of the fifth month at Wu hour, it is excellent. If collection cannot follow this method, obtaining just one part is sufficient. Wrap the medicine in a piece of crimson silk, limiting the quantity by circumference. Add hair clumps the size of an egg, Niu Huang [Calculus Bovis] the size of a tung tree seed, and twenty-seven reverse-hook thorns, grind into powder. Take seven Chi Xiao Dou [Adzuki Beans], grind into powder. First, thinly spread the hair clumps on the crimson silk, then spread the Niu Huang powder and others on top, sun-dry, then roll the crimson silk into a ball. Use hair as rope to tie it in a cross shape. Boil rapidly in a flatiron until bubbling. After boiling stabilizes, let it cool naturally. Scrape off, crush into powder, and sieve through silk. Take one fangcun bi (square-inch spoon). Crush the four parts of Gouqi together, sieve, and take two bi. Mix with the previous one bi, totaling three bi to ensure harmony. Divide into two portions. Take one portion on an empty stomach in the morning with wine, twice daily.
