Piao Xiao (Mirabilite, 朴硝) [1 jin]
Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 芒硝) [0.5 jin], Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏), Jinbo (Folium Aurum, 金箔) [each 2 liang], Hanshuishi (Alumen Rubrum, 寒水石) [4 liang; if unavailable, substitute with Shiyan (Halitum, 石盐)].
Take the above five ingredients. First, place the two types of "Xiao" into eight sheng of water and stir until dissolved. Seal the container tightly with paper and leave it overnight. Take the clear supernatant and pour it into a copper vessel. Separately, crush Hanshuishi and Shigao into particles the size of bean grains, place them in a silk bag, and immerse the bag in the liquid. Simmer over a gentle fire. When foam rises to the surface, insert chopsticks into the mixture. If the substance adhering to the chopsticks is as white and solidified as snow, immediately remove from heat and pour into a basin for storage. Wait for it to solidify, then take it out and dry it under the scorching sun. For patients suffering from persistent accumulation of heat and oppression, administer one fangcunbi (a square-inch measure) of the powder mixed with one he of Baimi (Mel, 白蜜) and five he of cold water. Stir until dissolved and take in one dose. Administer three times daily; discontinue once the heat subsides.
A prescription for treating heat in the stomach, lingering after febrile diseases, accompanied by vexation, oppression, dry mouth, and thirst.
Hanshuishi (Alumen Rubrum, 寒水石), Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas, 硝石), Chishizhi (Kaolin, 赤石脂), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix, 栝蒌根), Longgu (Os Draconis, 龙骨), Muli (Concha Ostreae, 牡蛎), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [each 5 fen], Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂心).
The above twelve ingredients are cut into small pieces. Boil in seven sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into four doses: three during the day and one at night. (Note: Some editions record only four mineral ingredients.)
A prescription for treating heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), painful and vexed hands and feet, dry mouth, dry lips, and heat in the chest.
Zhuye (Bambusae Folium, 竹叶), Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus, 小麦) [each 1 sheng], Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) [each 3 liang], Fuling (Poria, 茯苓), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦冬) [each 2 liang], Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参) [1.5 liang], Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix, 栝蒌根), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [each 1 liang], Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜) [5 liang].
The above twelve ingredients are cut into small pieces. Boil in twelve sheng of water. First decoct Zhuye and Xiaomai until eight sheng remain. Remove the dregs, add the remaining herbs, and decoct until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. For the elderly and children, divide into five doses.
A prescription for treating exogenous heat in the chest, sudden vexation and fullness with qi rebelling upward, and difficulty in urination and defecation.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏) [1 sheng], Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜) [8 liang], Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, 前胡) [4 liang], Fuling (Poria, 茯苓), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术) [each 5 liang], Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 杏仁), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 枳实) [each 3 liang], Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩) [each 2 liang], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [1 liang].
The above ten ingredients are cut into small pieces. Boil in nine sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. For severe heat in the chest, consume while cold. For obstruction in urination and defecation, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄) [3 liang]. Another version uses Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 栀子仁) [2 liang], making eleven ingredients in total.
